Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art occupies a distinctive faceted building in Ušće park, New Belgrade, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube. Opened in 1958 as the Modern Gallery and moved to its present building in 1965, it was among the earliest museums devoted to contemporary art. The museum’s setting is unusually important: the angular structure stands in open riverside parkland, while its collection concentrates on Yugoslav and Serbian modernism and later artistic practices. The building, the New Belgrade location and the region’s artistic history make this a specifically Belgrade experience rather than a generic modern-art stop. It is open 11:00–19:00 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, and 12:00–20:00 on Thursday and Saturday. It is closed on Tuesday.

The museum holds more than 35,000 works, including approximately 8,000 paintings and sculptures selected for exhibitions since its reopening in 2017. The collection follows Yugoslav and Serbian art from the early twentieth century through postwar modernism to contemporary practice. Displays may include painting, sculpture, drawing and photography, so the emphasis is broader than a single medium or movement. A visit is particularly useful for understanding how artists in the region responded to political, social and cultural change. Temporary exhibitions add a changing layer to the permanent collection and can alter the balance of what is on view.

Allow about 90 minutes to two hours for a focused visit to the permanent collection. Plan more time when a temporary exhibition is running, because the rotating programme can add rooms and ideas beyond the core display. The museum is compact compared with a palace-scale institution, but its split-level arrangement rewards a deliberate circuit rather than a hurried straight line. Pause at gallery junctions, check the next level and return to works that deserve a slower look. The Ušće park setting also makes it easy to extend the outing with a walk beside the rivers after leaving the galleries.

Choose a weekday morning for the calmest gallery experience, especially if the permanent collection is your priority. The museum is closed on Tuesday. It opens at 11:00 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, and at 12:00 on Thursday and Saturday. Thursday and Saturday therefore provide the latest closing time, 20:00, and can suit visitors who prefer an afternoon visit. Before travelling, compare the exhibition programme with your intended date: a temporary show may be the main reason to go, while a popular opening or event can make the galleries busier than an ordinary weekday.

General admission is 600 RSD per person. Admission is free on the first Wednesday of every month, making that recurring date useful for visitors who can plan around the museum. Keep the ticket desk and online-sales options in mind when deciding whether to visit spontaneously or organise entry in advance.

The museum stands in Ušće park in New Belgrade, on the west bank of the Sava–Danube confluence and across the rivers from Belgrade’s old town and Kalemegdan fortress. Bus 60 runs from Zeleni Venac towards Novi Beograd/Toplana and serves the named Museum of Contemporary Art stop. The Public Transport Secretariat says the line continues on its regular route during the current Zemunski Put works. From the stop, allow time for the approach through the park rather than expecting a city-centre entrance directly beside the road. The riverside position is clear once the building comes into view.

The split-level interior is the main practical feature to anticipate: a quick, straight-through walk can make you overlook a room or misread the intended route between galleries. Wheelchair users and visitors with strollers can access the entrance and exhibition floors. An elevator and movable platforms help where stairs are a barrier, and security staff assist with their use. Tuesday is the regular closure day, so do not treat the museum as an everyday stop in a Belgrade itinerary. Temporary exhibitions may change which rooms are open and how visitors move through the building, so follow the museum’s signs and staff directions.

Follow the notice at each gallery entrance before photographing contemporary works, because permissions can differ between the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions and loaned pieces. Flash should be treated as inappropriate unless the museum explicitly permits it, both for the atmosphere of the galleries and for the protection of sensitive works on paper or canvas.
