Osaka

Osaka has two centres and no third. Kita, in the north, is Umeda station and the tower blocks and the underground shopping levels beneath them; Minami, three subway stops south and geographically the middle of the city, is Namba, Shinsaibashi and the Dōtonbori canal. Almost every evening a visitor plans will happen in one of those two. The city held an estimated 2.8 million people in October 2025 at about 12,505 to the square kilometre, inside 222 square kilometres that grew from just 15 when the municipality was founded in 1889. Osaka Castle sits east of both centres, and Shitennō-ji, one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Japan, sits south of them.
