Beijing is governed as a municipality of 16 districts across 16,410.54 km², and the 2020 census counted 21,893,095 residents. Orientation here is by ring road: the 2nd was completed in 1981 along the line of the demolished city wall, and the 3rd through 6th were added outward from it, so an address is usually given by the ring it falls inside. Eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites lie within the municipality — the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, the Ming Tombs, the Zhoukoudian Peking Man site, the Central Axis, and stretches of the Great Wall and the Grand Canal. The hutong alleys between courtyard houses survive in patches inside the 2nd ring.
