Pak Khlong Talat is Bangkok's wholesale flower market, and it is the city's largest trading ground for cut flowers, garlands and ritual offerings — a district of lanes at the mouth of the Khlong Lot canal in Phra Nakhon where trade never fully stops. What is being sold matters as much as the scale. Pak Khlong Talat is where all of that is assembled, wholesale, in bulk, by people working fast. Daily, 24 hours; no scheduled closure day. Pak Khlong Talat remains open day and night, but individual shops and zones set their own hours. Street flower sellers are numerous at night, while some larger roadside shops may close.

What's inside

Two things share one name. The first is the street market: an open district of lanes, shophouse frontages and pavement pitches where the flower trade actually happens, spilling out towards Chak Phet Road and the river. Sacks of marigold heads, buckets of lotus, roses graded and bundled by the hundred, orchids by the crate, and rows of women threading jasmine garlands at speed. There is no ticketed attraction inside either, no museum and no interpretive display — the market is the exhibit.

How long to spend

Allow an hour. That is judgement rather than any operator's figure, and it covers walking the flower lanes at a browsing pace and then crossing into the Yodpiman hall for the river view. Getting there

MRT Sanam Chai is the answer, and it surfaces at the edge of the market, which makes this one of the simplest arrivals in the old city. The station also happens to be Bangkok's handsomest, so the approach is worth a minute of its own. Take the MRT Blue Line to Sanam Chai (BL31). Exit 4 is signed for the Flower Market; the Phra Nakhon District Office directs visitors from this exit toward Chakkraphet Road. Exit 5 serves Rajini Pier and Yodpiman Riverwalk. For a step-free station exit, use Exit 1 or 3, the exits BEM identifies as having elevators and ramps, then approach the market at street level.

What to watch out for

This is a working wholesale market and a visitor is, structurally, in the way. Traders move stock at speed on trolleys through lanes barely wide enough for them, and the correct behaviour is to stand aside and keep moving rather than to compose a shot in the middle of a gangway. Photography

Pak Khlong Talat is one of the most photographable places in Bangkok and one of the hardest to photograph politely. The material is extraordinary — banked colour, marigold orange by the sack, hands threading jasmine at a speed that needs a fast shutter to freeze — and the lanes are narrow, dim under awnings, and full of people trying to work. Under the awnings in between, expect mixed colour temperature and set white balance deliberately. The market is liveliest after midnight and before dawn, when fresh-flower deliveries arrive from around Thailand and wholesale buyers collect stock.
