What it is

Santa Cruz Church is a Catholic parish church on the west bank of the Chao Phraya in Thon Buri District, in Khwaeng Wat Kanlaya, at the heart of the Kudi Chin neighbourhood. A church was first established on the site around 1770, on land granted to Portuguese Catholics, and it served as Bangkok's principal Catholic church and the seat of the Apostolic Vicariate of Siam until Assumption Cathedral was completed in 1821. The building standing today is the third on the plot: a second church replaced the original in 1845, and the present Renaissance Revival structure, crowned by a dome, was built between 1913 and 1916. It is the physical record of a Portuguese Catholic community that predates the founding of Bangkok on the opposite bank.

Getting there

Santa Cruz Church stands on the Thon Buri side of the Chao Phraya, in Khwaeng Wat Kanlaya, and the natural approach is across the river rather than around it. Crossing by boat from the Phra Nakhon bank puts a visitor into the Kudi Chin lanes within a few minutes' walk of the church, and the dome is visible from the water, which makes the river the easiest way to orient. Arriving by road through Thon Buri is possible but slower, and the final approach is on foot in any case: the lanes around the church are too narrow for a car and are walked, not driven.

What to watch out for

The first thing to understand about Santa Cruz Church is that it is in use. Masses, funerals and weddings take precedence over visitors, and walking into one is the most common mistake made here; if a service is running, wait outside or come back.
