The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East and holds a vast collection of Pharaonic antiquities spanning the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman era. French architect Marcel Dourgnon won the international design competition in 1895, and Khedive Abbas Helmy II inaugurated the museum in 1902. Daily 09:00–17:00. What's inside

More than 100 display halls occupy two floors. The ground floor arranges objects broadly in chronological order, while the first floor groups material by category or collection. Ministry highlights include the complete burials of Yuya and Thuya, Psusennes I and the Tanis treasures, the Narmer Palette, and statues of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. Extensive holdings of papyri, coffins, sarcophagi and jewellery fill out the route. Open every day with no weekly closure day listed. The ticket window closes at 16:00. How long to spend

The museum contains more than 100 halls across two floors, so a complete room-by-room circuit is a different undertaking from a focused route through the Narmer Palette, royal statues, Tanis treasures and selected funerary collections. Decide on priority periods or objects before entering and use the chronological ground floor for orientation. The Egyptian Museum is open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm, and the ticket window closes at 4:00pm. During Ramadan the Ministry publishes reduced hours of 9:00am to 4:00pm with the last ticket at 3:00pm. Daily 09:00–17:00. The museum is on the northern side of Tahrir Square in Downtown Cairo. Large bags, large backpacks, luggage and parcels over 40 by 40 centimetres cannot enter the galleries and must be left in the cloakroom; umbrellas and sharp items also belong there. Photography

Mobile-phone photography for personal use is free at the Egyptian Museum, but flash is prohibited. Visitors must not photograph other guests or staff.
