This guide is part of our Vienna destination coverage. Vienna
Plan within the Vienna core zone first
Vienna's core fare zone joins more than the U-Bahn, trams and city buses. Wiener Linien also includes ÖBB trains, the Badner Bahn and most regional buses when both ends of the journey remain inside the published Vienna boundary. That makes the route, not the logo on the vehicle, the useful starting point. A suburban train can be a city journey, while the same railway line can cross the boundary and require a different ticket. Check the complete origin and destination before buying.
For everyday orientation, the operator's 2026 visitor material counts five U-Bahn lines, 29 tram lines and 135 bus routes. NightLine buses run every night, while the U-Bahn runs through the night on weekends. These are network-wide patterns, not a promised departure at a particular stop. Use the current WienMobil journey planner or the line timetable for the exact date, especially after an evening performance or when the last connection matters.
Build a sightseeing day as a small number of geographic moves. Stephansplatz, the Hofburg and the Ring can support a long walking block; Schönbrunn, Belvedere, Prater and the central station areas each need a deliberate connection from that block. One well-chosen U-Bahn or tram leg often removes more walking than a series of short rides. Count actual paid journeys only after deciding which parts of the day are comfortably walkable.
Rail needs an extra live check in 2026. The ÖBB main-line closure that began on 7 September 2026 affects the Hauptbahnhof-St. Marx-Praterstern section through the end of October 2027. It changes some S-Bahn patterns but does not close Vienna's whole rail or urban network. A route result for the travel date is more reliable than a familiar schematic map, particularly around St. Marx, Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof. The separate Vienna airport-transfer guide explains the temporary airport approach in detail.

Compare single, 24-hour and 7-day products
The 2026 full-fare baseline is a single journey: €3.00 digitally or €3.20 on paper. Wiener Linien defines it as one trip in one direction within the Vienna core zone, with changes allowed but no interruption, and a maximum duration of 80 minutes. A paper single must be validated before the first ride. This is not a timed sightseeing ticket that permits stopping for coffee and resuming later; once the journey is interrupted, the next movement needs another fare.
For repeated travel, the 24-hour ticket costs €9.70 digitally or €10.20 on paper. It covers unlimited core-zone journeys for 24 hours from the selected start or paper validation. A digital ticket is issued to one named person, is not transferable and is valid only with government photo identification bearing that passenger's name. A paper 24-hour ticket must be stamped before first use. Keep those conditions with the price: digital is cheaper, but paper and digital are not interchangeable versions of the same possession rule.
The 7-day ticket costs €25.20 digitally or €28.90 on paper. The digital product is valid from the selected start date through 00:59 on the eighth day, belongs to the named passenger and is not transferable. The paper product starts when it is validated and is transferable. It can therefore be handed to another person only when the current holder is no longer travelling with it; transferability does not make one ticket valid for two simultaneous passengers.
Do not search for an old 48- or 72-hour Wiener Linien product. Both were withdrawn from 1 January 2026. Current alternatives are the 24-hour and 7-day products. The simple arithmetic is useful: four €3.00 digital singles equal €12.00, above a €9.70 digital 24-hour ticket; three equal €9.00, below it. On paper, four €3.20 singles equal €12.80, above a €10.20 paper 24-hour ticket. Those comparisons assume valid ordinary core-zone journeys and do not include airport travel, tourist discounts or reduced-fare eligibility.

Treat Vienna Airport as an extra fare zone
Vienna Airport is outside the Vienna core zone. Wiener Linien places the boundary at Schwechat for journeys towards the airport and states that a core-zone ticket is valid only as far as that boundary. A 24-hour or 7-day city ticket therefore does not, by itself, cover the entire airport trip. Buy the additional fare or the airport operator's complete ticket for the actual train or bus chosen; do not assume that a city pass becomes an airport ticket because the journey begins on an urban platform.
Keep route choice and city-fare choice separate. The airport's official rail page lists S7 to Wien Mitte and Railjet to Hauptbahnhof, but the current main-line closure changes the operating pattern described in the dedicated Vienna airport-transfer guide. During that closure, airport S7 services terminate at St. Marx, while other named rail services use different patterns. Check the live ÖBB result for the travel date and use the airport guide for the temporary route details rather than treating a normal city map as a timetable.
The airport page advertises rail fares from €4.10 from or to Wien Mitte or Hauptbahnhof, including travel on Vienna's public-transport network. The word “from” matters. It is an operator-published starting price, not a guaranteed fare for every date, passenger, train, booking channel or onward destination. Price the exact journey in the official sales flow. A separate CAT or airport-bus product follows its own operator terms and is not made valid by holding a Wiener Linien core-zone ticket.
This separation prevents two opposite errors. A visitor with a valid 7-day Vienna ticket may need only the boundary extension for an eligible ÖBB journey, rather than paying twice for the covered city segment. A visitor choosing CAT or an airport bus may instead need that operator's separate product. Confirm the selected service before payment. The city ticket, the extra zone and the airport service are three different concepts, even when a sales screen combines some of them into one transaction.

Choose the mode after checking the stop and ticket
Use the U-Bahn for the long cross-city movement, then switch to walking or a surface route that fits the final address. Trams are particularly useful where the journey follows the Ring or connects a major district without a convenient underground entrance. Buses fill shorter local gaps. ÖBB S-Bahn services can be valid with the same core-zone ticket when the whole trip remains inside the boundary, but their current operating pattern must still be checked independently. One fare zone does not mean one operator or one timetable.
Purchase rules depend on the ticket format. Wiener Linien sells singles online, in the WienMobil app, at its information and ticket offices, at machines, in tobacconists and at tram ticket machines. A paper ticket that has not already been validated must be stamped before the first ride. Digital tickets display their validity in the app and named digital time tickets require matching photo identification. Check the product shown on the screen or paper instead of applying one validation habit to every ticket.
Contactless Tap+Ride is a limited pilot, not a citywide tap-in and tap-out system. From 28 May 2026, marked devices at nine U-Bahn stations sell a 1 Fahrt WIEN single using Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The listed stations are Südtiroler Platz-Hauptbahnhof, Westbahnhof, Bahnhof Meidling, Stephansplatz, Schwedenplatz, Spittelau, Zieglergasse, Neubaugasse and Erdberg. One tap buys a single ticket; there is no checkout tap, daily fare capping or automatic conversion into a 24-hour ticket. Keep the same payment device available for inspection.
Accessibility also varies by the exact route. Wiener Linien says every U-Bahn station and most tram and bus stops are accessible, all buses are low-floor, and many trams are low-floor rather than all of them. Lift works or a high-floor tram can change the practical journey. A wheelchair user, a traveller with a pushchair or anyone who cannot use stairs should check the live accessible route and lift status, not infer step-free travel from the line colour alone. For late travel, NightLine buses operate nightly and weekend U-Bahn service runs overnight, but the precise stop sequence and departure still come from the live planner.

Avoid old tickets, unstamped paper and airport assumptions
The most common planning mistake is using a pre-2026 ticket list. Wiener Linien no longer sells its 48- and 72-hour products. Compare today's 24-hour and 7-day tickets with the actual number of journeys instead. A rolling 24-hour ticket can bridge two calendar days if the selected start makes that useful; the digital 7-day ticket follows its separate rule and ends at 00:59 on the eighth day. Duration labels are not interchangeable.
The next mistake is confusing purchase with validation. An unused paper single, paper 24-hour ticket or paper 7-day ticket that requires validation is not ready merely because it was paid for. Stamp it before the first journey and check that the mark is legible. A digital named ticket has the opposite practical risk: it may already carry the selected validity window, but the traveller must have the matching government photo ID. Do not stamp a digital ticket, and do not expect to lend it to another passenger.
Do not break a single journey into sightseeing stops. The €3.00 digital or €3.20 paper single allows changes in one direction, without interruption, for no more than 80 minutes. Leaving the trip to visit a market, museum or café ends the logic of that fare even if the clock has not reached 80 minutes. A 24-hour ticket is often the cleaner choice when a day intentionally includes several separated visits, but only the itinerary can show whether enough paid journeys exist.
Do not tap a bank card at an ordinary gate and assume Vienna operates a universal contactless fare system. Tap+Ride is a one-year pilot at nine named U-Bahn stations, and it sells single tickets at marked devices. It does not calculate a best fare across the day. Elsewhere, use an official ticket machine, sales point, app or ticket shop. A card used for Tap+Ride must remain with the passenger for inspection; buying for someone else also requires that person to travel together with the buyer.
Finally, keep the airport outside the city-pass calculation until the route is known. The core-zone boundary is Schwechat, the 2026-27 rail closure changes some airport rail patterns, and CAT and airport buses have separate terms. Check the live airport connection, then decide whether the city portion is already covered. That order avoids both an invalid extension and paying twice for a segment included in an eligible combined rail ticket.

Common questions
How much is a single public-transport journey in Vienna?
From 1 January 2026, Wiener Linien lists a full-fare single at €3.00 digitally or €3.20 on paper. It covers one uninterrupted journey in one direction within the Vienna core zone, with changes allowed, for up to 80 minutes.
How much are Vienna's 24-hour and 7-day tickets?
The 24-hour ticket is €9.70 digitally or €10.20 on paper. The 7-day ticket is €25.20 digitally or €28.90 on paper. Digital time tickets are named and non-transferable; paper products must be validated before first use.
Can I still buy a 48-hour or 72-hour Vienna ticket?
No. Wiener Linien withdrew its 48-hour and 72-hour products from 1 January 2026 and directs travellers to the current 24-hour or 7-day alternatives.
Does a Vienna city ticket include Vienna Airport?
Not for the entire trip. Vienna Airport lies outside the Vienna core zone, whose boundary towards the airport is Schwechat. Buy the required extension or the selected airport operator's complete ticket after checking the exact service.
Can I tap a contactless bank card for public transport in Vienna?
Only through the marked Tap+Ride pilot devices at nine named U-Bahn stations. The device sells a single ticket using Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay; it is not a network-wide tap-in system and does not cap daily fares.
Does Vienna public transport run overnight?
NightLine buses operate every night, and Wiener Linien says the U-Bahn runs through the night on weekends. Check the live journey planner for the exact stop, date and departure rather than treating that network pattern as a guaranteed train time.
