Vienna Airport: 2026–27 Rail Closure

Vienna's main-line closure runs from 7 September 2026 through the end of October 2027 and affects the Hauptbahnhof–St. Marx–Praterstern section. It is a change to the central rail route, not an airport-wide rail shutdown. Read the closure notice before choosing the connection that fits the accommodation's onward route. Airport S7 trains terminate at St. Marx during the closure. The ÖBB booklet identifies tram 18 and tram 71 as onward connections from there. That makes St. Marx a useful arrival hub when the next part of the trip matches those services, but it is not a promise that every hotel is close to the stop or that a late arrival will meet the last local connection. Check the final address and the live service for the travel date.

The same ÖBB notice says that REX7 is diverted via Hauptbahnhof, while RJX, RJ and IC airport services via Hauptbahnhof continue. A traveller whose accommodation is better connected to Hauptbahnhof may therefore choose that rail hub instead of planning around St. Marx. CAT uses replacement coaches to Wien Mitte during the closure, and the operator separately lists rail alternatives through Hauptbahnhof and the shortened S7. Existing Vienna Airport Bus routes continue, with a Praterstern connection listed from 5 September. Choose the arrival hub from the next connection, not from the name of the airport service alone. Use St. Marx when the S7 arrival and the onward tram connection fit the final address. Use Hauptbahnhof when the listed REX7, RJX, RJ or IC service and the onward city route fit better. The ÖBB closure booklet confirms those different patterns, but it does not turn one hub into a universal fastest choice. CAT is a separate choice for Wien Mitte. During the closure, CAT serves Wien Mitte by coach, with up to five departures per hour according to its closure page. The operator's live homepage lists an expected 21-minute journey, departures every 12 minutes from 07:00 to 19:00 and every 15 minutes at other times. The CAT city boarding point is Marxergasse 1b. The airport boarding point is Terminal 3, bus station 0. The homepage lists city departures from 05:30 to 23:15 and airport departures from 06:10 to 23:37 during the expected coach operation. Vienna Airport Bus routes continue during the closure, and the closure notice lists a Praterstern connection from 5 September. Treat that as another route to compare with the accommodation's final connection. Do not combine a CAT coach time, a bus time and a rail time as if they described the same stop or the same ticket.

The CAT ticket information page publishes full-price single and return tickets of €14.90 and €24.90. It says online tickets have six-month validity. Listed reductions require named eligibility cards, and children under 15 travel free. Treat the published figures as the full tariff in the source, not as a promise that an online promotion is unavailable or that every visitor qualifies for a reduction. The Vienna Airport general rail page still displays S7 to Wien Mitte in 25 minutes and a from-€4.10 fare. The dated ÖBB closure notice takes priority for the route during this period. These are the operator's expected coach times. Verify the actual date, boarding point and direction before treating them as a departure plan. For an early or late flight, plan backwards from the terminal and the final city connection. Confirm the airport terminal, the chosen arrival hub in the city, the local connection after St. Marx, Hauptbahnhof or Wien Mitte, and the live timetable on the same date. The closure changes the central rail pattern through the end of October 2027, so a route remembered from an earlier month is not enough.

Leave time for the walk from the platform or coach, bags and the next connection. The CAT homepage's first and last listed departures are operator information, not a guarantee against traffic or a missed local connection.
