Plan one, two or three days in Lima, or a full week, with coherent routes through the historic centre, coastal districts, museums and Pachacamac.

This guide is part of our Lima destination coverage. Lima

One day in Lima: read the historic centre first

Start. Travel to Plaza Mayor. Make the square the start of the walk, not a point that must be reached again later. From there, walk through the Historic Centre of Lima to Convento de San Francisco. These three names sit inside one UNESCO area, so no vehicle is needed between them.

Fixed stop. Use one centre interior as the fixed stop. San Francisco is the first option, but check its own information for the date. If it cannot receive visitors, keep the same walk. Do not replace it with a museum in another part of the city. The centre still gives the day a clear subject without that entry.

Meal. Eat inside the centre after the fixed stop. This is also the point to decide how much of the afternoon remains. Keep the meal even when the morning runs late. Removing it only turns a small delay into a tired final walk.

Flexible block. After lunch, continue through centre streets towards the transport point selected before leaving the accommodation. Add no more than one other interior, and only when its own status has been checked. Otherwise, use the public streets until it is time to leave. Choose that final point before extending the walk so the group can leave from a convenient location.

Backup. If one street is blocked, use the next local link and keep the same end point. If the group has less energy than expected, drop the extra interior first and shorten the last walking block second. Keep enough time for the ride back.

End. Finish at the transport point selected before leaving the accommodation. Do not add Miraflores, Barranco, Museo Larco or Pachacamac at the end of this day. Each would add a new ride and only a brief arrival. The complete one-day line is Plaza Mayor, San Francisco, lunch, a final centre walk and the planned journey home.

Two days in Lima: add Miraflores and Barranco

Start. Keep day one as the centre line above. On day two, take one ride to Huaca Pucllana. Check the site information before the date and use Pucllana as the fixed morning stop. Do not plan to return here after reaching the coast.

Fixed stop. Complete the confirmed Pucllana visit first. If it is not available, start at the coast instead. Do not use the open space in the schedule for a ride to Pueblo Libre. That change would break the west-then-south line used by the rest of the day.

Meal. Eat in Miraflores after the fixed stop. During lunch, select the exact end of the Malecón de Miraflores walk. The municipal source describes several linked parks, so the number of park sections can change without losing the coast.

Flexible block. Ride or walk west to the chosen malecón start, then follow one direction. When the morning takes longer, shorten this block from its far end. Keep the last coast point that gives a simple southbound ride. Do not go down to the lower coast unless that change and its new end point were planned.

Next stop. Take one southbound ride to Puente de los Suspiros. Cross the bridge area, continue into Bajada de Baños or nearby Barranco streets, and eat the evening meal in Barranco. The bridge is the start of this block, not the point at which to turn back.

Backup. If Pucllana drops out, give more time to the malecón and Barranco. If the coast block becomes shorter, reach Barranco sooner. Do not reverse those two areas.

End. Start the ride home from Barranco. Across two days, the first line is centre only; the second line is Pucllana, Miraflores lunch, coast, Barranco and home. Museo Larco and Pachacamac remain unused because both require another date.

Three days in Lima: choose objects or landscape

Larco Museum

Start. Days one and two remain the centre line and coast line. Day three has two valid forms. Form A goes to Pueblo Libre for Museo Larco. Form B goes south to Lurín for Pachacamac. Select one form before the day starts.

Form A fixed stop. Travel to Museo Larco using the route selected from the accommodation. Use the permanent display first and visible storage second, as shown by the museum information. Pause in the grounds and keep enough energy for the collection rather than setting another fixed entry.

Form A meal and end. Eat in Pueblo Libre. After lunch, use only a nearby stop whose status has already been checked, or begin the ride home. Do not use the museum as the first part of a later coast line. Miraflores and Barranco were covered on day two.

Form B fixed stop. Travel directly to Pachacamac without an earlier appointment, verifying the route and any transfers from the accommodation. The official source describes the museum and a circuit of about three kilometres. Keep the museum and circuit in the same block. Set the point at which the group will turn back if the full circuit no longer fits.

Form B meal and end. Keep a large ride-home margin. Plan the main meal for the return area instead of depending on an unverified place at the site. Add no centre entry before departure and no coast entry after the return. This day works only when the southbound ride, museum, circuit and return remain together.

Backup. Select Form A when an indoor, collection-based day fits the group. Select Form B when an outdoor excursion fits the group. Check the chosen place before locking the ride. If its status changes, use the other form only after that place is also checked. Otherwise, use a simple local day and move the fixed stop to another date.

End. A three-day stay includes only one form. A four-day stay can use Form A on one date and Form B on the next. Never combine them after lunch. The clean three-day order is centre, coast, then Pueblo Libre or Lurín.

One week in Lima: expand without repeating districts

Pachacamac site Museum

Start. Keep days one to three as written above. Day four uses the unused Form A or Form B from day three. If day three was Museo Larco, day four is Pachacamac. If day three was Pachacamac, day four is Museo Larco. Keep the two fixed stops on separate dates.

Day four meal and end. On the Pueblo Libre form, eat there and leave the afternoon flexible. On the Lurín form, keep the meal near the return area and leave the evening free. In both forms, plan an outward journey and a return journey; the transfers depend on the starting address and chosen transport.

Day five. Use a different part of the Malecón de Miraflores. Select one direction, one lunch point in Miraflores and one end point. This is a flexible day. Shorten the walk when more rest is needed. Do not add the Pucllana entry already used on day two.

Day six. Return to Barranco and begin at the Bridge of Sighs. Continue beyond the bridge through the ravine area and nearby streets named by the municipal source. Check any indoor stop before using it. Eat in Barranco and begin the ride home there. This is a longer Barranco block than the end of day two.

Day seven. Keep this date empty until the first six days have happened. Use it for a fixed stop that moved, a centre interior missed on day one, a second look at a favourite area or rest. Do not book the backup date in advance. A full backup is more useful than another required stop.

Four, five and six days. A four-day stay ends after both day-three forms. Five days add the flexible coast walk. Six days add the longer Barranco block. Seven days add the backup. This order makes each added date easy to understand and easy to remove.

End. For every date, write start, fixed stop, meal, flexible block, backup and end. Keep one evening free after the long southbound day. More days should reduce pressure. They should not create more cross-city rides.

Lima with children: give each day one clear promise

Huaca Pucllana
Photograph · Diego Delso · CC BY-SA 4.0

Family planning starts with limits, not a larger attraction list. Set the latest acceptable return, the longest continuous walking block and the point at which lunch must happen. Next, assign one concrete promise to the date. The promise might be seeing an earthen pyramid, finding particular shapes in a collection, comparing the centre's balconies or completing part of a sanctuary circuit. Everything after that is optional.

For a compact Miraflores programme, book Huaca Pucllana only after reviewing the institution's latest conditions. Follow it with lunch in Miraflores, then travel to a short segment of the Malecón de Miraflores. Mark the park endpoint on the map before leaving lunch. When the morning runs long, trim the coast from that endpoint backwards; the return plan remains intact.

For an indoor-led programme, go directly to Museo Larco. Agree on a collection task that can be completed before attention fades, add a pause in the grounds and eat in Pueblo Libre. Leave the rest of the afternoon undecided. This makes it possible to add a nearby, preverified stop when everyone is comfortable or to head back without describing the day as unfinished.

For the Historic Centre of Lima, begin at Plaza Mayor, set one interior as the fixed point, break for food in the centre and finish along the path to the ride home. Turn the fountain, balconies or street grid into a short observation game. If entry conditions change, the game continues outdoors; no emergency relocation is necessary.

Pachacamac is the high-effort family date. The official route is roughly three kilometres, so agree on a turnaround rule and verify assistance relevant to the group before travelling south. Pair it with no second formal attraction. Arrange the post-excursion meal and evening around the return location.

Across several days, alternate fixed admissions with adjustable outdoor blocks. Put the easiest-to-shorten programme after the southern outing. Allow one child to select the day's question and another to call the planned break. These roles create participation without promising every room or path. Stop when the agreed outcome has been reached, even if spare names remain on the map.

Build your Lima plan around clusters and margins

Puente de los Suspiros

Run the Lima itinerary planner with the actual dates, group and tempo, then audit the result before treating it as a schedule. Write each generated day in a four-part line: starting area, fixed appointment, meal area, final pickup. If one part is missing, add it before adding another attraction. This exposes routes that look full on screen but have no workable middle or exit.

The second audit is directional. A centre day should move away from Plaza Mayor after the first orientation rather than circle repeatedly. A coastal day should progress from Miraflores towards Barranco. A Pueblo Libre day should start there instead of using the area as a bridge between central and coastal stops. The Lurín excursion should have no earlier appointment elsewhere. Reverse movements are acceptable only when they return the group to its accommodation, not when they collect one more sight.

The third audit concerns constraints. Mark admissions whose responsible institutions have confirmed access. Mark outdoor segments as flexible. Mark unknown conditions as unresolved rather than open. Keep only the earliest constrained item on a date, unless two bookings are genuinely close enough to preserve lunch and transfer margin. Re-enter the plan after changing a date or tempo so the algorithm can recalculate from the real inputs.

Use local substitutions. When San Francisco is unavailable, extend the centre line. When Pucllana cannot fit, lengthen the coast or reach Barranco sooner. When outdoor conditions rule out Pachacamac, move the entire excursion and consider Pueblo Libre on a date whose museum access is confirmed. Never retain the southbound journey while deleting most of the archaeological circuit; that preserves the transport cost and removes the reason for it.

Now compare the schedule with things to do in Lima. The shortlist explains what deserves consideration; the calendar must decide order and omission. Remove a repeated category before squeezing meals or return margins. Eight strong candidates across the trip do not require eight admissions on every version.

Complete the audit by reading each day aloud as a sequence of verbs: arrive, enter, eat, walk, transfer, finish. Two consecutive transfers usually reveal an avoidable detour. Two fixed entries separated by lunch and a cross-city ride reveal an overcommitted afternoon. Save one same-area fallback, record the intended endpoint and rerun the planner. A robust result continues to make sense after one delay because its geography, rather than its stop count, holds the day together.
