Sugarloaf Cable Car is the aerial route through Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar, connecting the ground station at Praia Vermelha with Morro da Urca and Sugarloaf Mountain. The operator describes the journey as a way to connect with nature between Vermelha Beach, Urca Hill and the summit. It is both transport and viewpoint: the cable-car structure, the two mountain stops and the panorama are the visit. It should not be confused with the separate Corcovado route to Christ the Redeemer. Daily 08:30–21:00; last uphill cable car at 19:30. From 3–15 September 2026: daily 07:30–21:00; last uphill cable car at 19:30.

A ticket covers the cable-car journey and the park experience, with the route broken by Morro da Urca before the final ascent to Sugarloaf. The operator also presents trails, nature, exhibitions and programmed activities as part of Parque Bondinho, so do not plan it as a single photograph from a station platform. The views shift between the beach, Guanabara Bay, Urca and the wider city. ArtScience-style indoor attractions are not part of this site; the main experience remains an exposed mountain landscape. No regular closure day. The operator states that the park opens every day and normally operates in rain.

Allow two to three hours for the cable-car trip, both mountain stops, queues and time at the viewpoints. A quick up-and-down ride misses the reason to stop at Morro da Urca, while a longer park visit needs a return plan before sunset or any scheduled event. Keep this attraction separate from a Corcovado visit on the same day. Standard adult Bilhete Bondinho: R$205. The ticket includes park entry and return cable-car travel on both sections: Praia Vermelha–Morro da Urca and Morro da Urca–Pão de Açúcar.

Use the operator's live schedule before travelling. Parque Bondinho publishes programme hours and warns that activities can vary, so a historic timetable should not become a promise in a guide. Clear conditions improve long-distance views, but rain, cloud, wind or lightning can affect an exposed mountain visit. Daily 08:30–21:00; last uphill cable car at 19:30. From 3–15 September 2026: daily 07:30–21:00; last uphill cable car at 19:30. Accessible platforms and lifts: two at Praia Vermelha station, three at Morro da Urca and three at Pão de Açúcar. Morro da Urca also has the Via Verde accessible route and an inclined lift.

The official park address is Avenida Pasteur 520 in Urca, beside Praia Vermelha. Use that address for the ground station rather than routing to Sugarloaf summit, which is the end of the cable-car journey. The base station is at Avenida Pasteur 520, Urca. By metro, leave Botafogo station through exit E–Mena Barreto, walk to the route 513 terminus on Rua Voluntários da Pátria, alight at UNIRIO and walk 260 metres. Principal bus routes are 107 Central–Urca, 513SP Urca–Metrô Botafogo and 167 Terminal Gentileza–Urca. The park has no public car park.

This is a high, exposed natural setting, so follow staff instructions and stay behind barriers at every viewpoint. Wear footwear suitable for steps and uneven ground if adding trails, and keep loose items secure in wind. The cable car is part of the experience, not a shortcut to disregard mountain conditions. Keep valuables attended in the city approach and at crowded viewpoints. Accessible platforms and lifts: two at Praia Vermelha station, three at Morro da Urca and three at Pão de Açúcar. The Cápsula do Tempo at Morro da Urca and Restaurante Clássico at Pão de Açúcar are not accessible.

The cable car itself, the approach from Praia Vermelha and the changing views between Morro da Urca and Sugarloaf are the strongest subjects. The Commons lead image shows the cable car travelling toward Sugarloaf and carries the recorded author and licence credit. Keep cameras and phones secure during the ride, respect safety barriers and avoid blocking narrow viewing areas. Weather can change both visibility and the safety of a shot quickly. Keep an extra image-free moment for the moving panorama itself. It includes park entry and cable-car travel from Praia Vermelha to Morro da Urca and onward to Pão de Açúcar, with the return journey included.
