Rome Airports: Fiumicino and Ciampino

Rome has two passenger airports with different ground-transport networks. Fiumicino, officially Leonardo da Vinci, has a railway station inside the airport. Ciampino, officially G.B. Pastine, does not have a terminal railway station, so every public-transport journey begins by bus. Check the airport code on the booking before comparing routes; a Fiumicino fare or timetable does not describe Ciampino.

From Fiumicino, Leonardo express is the simple rail choice for an address best reached from Roma Termini: it runs non-stop between the airport and Termini. FL1 is the alternative rail pattern for travellers whose accommodation or onward route works better from another Rome interchange, including Roma Tiburtina. From Ciampino, ATAC bus 520 connects the airport with Subaugusta on Metro A, while bus 720 connects it with Laurentina on Metro B. These are city-network routes, useful when the corresponding metro line fits the final address. Ciampino Airlink instead combines a non-stop bus to Ciampino railway station with a train toward Roma Termini. Direct commercial coaches also run between the airport and Termini; the airport publishes the operators and a date-specific departure board, but each coach keeps its own ticket and timetable. A licensed taxi is the door-to-door option from either airport. Compare it with the complete public-transport journey, including the terminal walk and the connection after Termini, Tiburtina, Subaugusta, Laurentina or Ciampino station.

Leonardo express has the clearest published airport-to-city time: Trenitalia schedules the non-stop Fiumicino–Roma Termini journey at 32 minutes. FL1 is scheduled at 48 minutes between Fiumicino and Roma Tiburtina. Neither figure includes baggage collection, the walk from the gate to the airport station, waiting for the departure, or the final metro, bus, taxi or walk from the Rome station. Ciampino Airlink publishes a 10-minute non-stop bus leg between the terminal forecourt and Ciampino railway station. That is not a 10-minute airport-to-Termini promise: the rail connection, interchange and waiting time remain. Rome's mobility agency gives approximate taxi times of 40–50 minutes from Fiumicino and about 30 minutes from Ciampino to destinations inside the Aurelian Walls. These are planning estimates, not guarantees; road conditions and the exact address still matter. The same applies to direct coaches from either airport. For a fair comparison, map the hotel before choosing. Termini favours Leonardo express or a direct Ciampino coach, while a destination convenient to Tiburtina or an FL1 interchange may avoid crossing central Rome. Metro A and B addresses may make the 520 or 720 more useful than a Termini route.

Leonardo express costs €14 for one journey. Trenitalia also publishes a Mini-groups fare of €40 for four tickets bought in one transaction. Children under four travel free; one child aged over four and under twelve travels free with each paying adult. Luggage has no surcharge. Ciampino Airlink costs €2.70 per person for one combined bus-and-train journey between the airport and Roma Termini. Children under four and luggage travel free, but Trenitalia states that no discount or reduction applies to the ATRAL bus portion. The airport–Ciampino station bus cannot be bought on its own through Trenitalia's sales systems; select Ciampino Aeroporto and buy the combined trip through a Trenitalia channel. ATAC's €1.50 BIT lasts 100 minutes from first validation and covers buses 520 and 720 plus one metro journey under the published transfer rules. Validate at the beginning and again when transferring to the metro. ATAC's ROMA24H, ROMA48H and ROMA72H city products also cover 520 and 720, but the operator excludes the non-stop Termini–Fiumicino train and the special Cotral Fiumicino connection. Contactless purchase also depends on the operator. ATAC tap & go can issue a BIT on its network. Trenitalia TAP&TAP sells a standard adult rail ticket, one card per passenger, and does not apply child or other reductions; on Leonardo express you tap at Termini or Fiumicino and do not tap out. For direct journeys inside the Aurelian Walls, Rome's published taxi fares are €55 per vehicle from Fiumicino and €40 per vehicle from Ciampino, including supplements under the airport tariff. Other destinations may be metered or have a different fixed fare. Confirm that the address is inside the defined area and that the journey is direct before relying on the fixed amount. Trenitalia advertises a 15-minute Leonardo express pattern, but its current timetable notes 30- or 45-minute service in some slots. FL1 runs every 15 minutes on working days and every 30 minutes on Sundays and public holidays. These are service patterns, not guarantees after baggage reclaim. Check the dated timetable for planned work, strikes and disruption. At Fiumicino, Trenitalia lists the staffed ticket office as open daily from 06:45 to 22:12 and also provides self-service machines. The counter hours describe ticket sales, not the operating span of every train. At Ciampino, Airlink publishes the 10-minute shuttle leg but not a universal total journey time on its product page. The airport's bus board is date-specific and lists separate departures for Termini, Ciampino station and Anagnina. ATAC 520 and 720, Ciampino Airlink and the commercial Termini coaches are different services; verify the route number, stop, ticket and live departure together. Allow time to walk from arrivals to the correct stop. A scheduled rail time covers the train leg, and a scheduled coach time remains exposed to road conditions. Neither is an arrival guarantee for a hotel check-in or a flight departure.

Sunday changes the Fiumicino comparison: FL1 runs every 30 minutes on Sundays and public holidays rather than every 15 minutes on working days. The Leonardo express main page advertises a 15-minute pattern, while its current timetable notes 30- or 45-minute service in some slots. Check the dated result for both; a headline frequency neither establishes the last usable departure nor protects a delayed-flight connection. Ciampino has a specific night constraint: the airport says commercial take-offs and landings are closed from 23:00 to 06:00, and the Arrivals terminal closes from 00:00 to 06:00. That does not guarantee that a flight landing before 23:00 will meet a chosen bus, metro or train. Compare the actual landing time with the airport's dated bus board and the last onward metro or rail connection. The currently reviewed sources do not establish one permanent last departure for every Ciampino route, so none is claimed here. For an early flight, work backwards from the recommended terminal-arrival time supplied by the airline or airport. Add the city-to-hub leg, waiting time, the airport leg and the terminal walk. Do not use a scheduled 32-minute train ride or 10-minute Airlink bus leg as the whole pre-flight allowance.

If public transport no longer fits, use the official taxi rank. Rome-licensed taxis are white, display TAXI on the roof, and carry the Roma Capitale symbol and licence number. Ask for a receipt.
