Hong Kong Airport: Train, Bus or Taxi

Airport Express is the simplest fixed-time choice when Hong Kong, Kowloon or Tsing Yi Station works for the final address. MTR lists a 24-minute Airport–Hong Kong journey, 22 minutes to Kowloon and 14 minutes to Tsing Yi. Hong Kong Station connects with Central; Kowloon Station is useful for western Kowloon, but neither station name means every hotel is beside the platform. Cityflyer is the direct-bus alternative for corridors that the Airport Express stations do not serve closely. Citybus identifies A11 between the airport and North Point via Kowloon Station, Sheung Wan, Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay. A21 runs between the airport and Hung Hom Station through the Kowloon hotel corridor. Check the current stop sequence for the accommodation rather than assuming that the route terminus is the nearest stop. Road traffic makes a scheduled bus journey less predictable than the train. A metered taxi removes the interchange and can make sense for several travellers, bulky luggage or an address far from a rail station or airport-bus stop. Red urban taxis cover most of Hong Kong; green New Territories and blue Lantau taxis have restricted operating areas, although all three types may serve the airport passenger terminals. The published Airport Express journey times are station-to-station: 24 minutes between Airport and Hong Kong, 22 minutes to Kowloon and 14 minutes to Tsing Yi. They do not include immigration, baggage collection, the walk from arrivals, waiting for a departure, or the final connection. MTR says exact times should be checked at an Airport Express station on the travel day, so treat the figures as scheduled journey times rather than arrival guarantees. Choose Hong Kong Station for Central and nearby Hong Kong Island connections; choose Kowloon only when its exit or onward transport fits the address; choose Tsing Yi when changing there shortens the route to another part of the MTR network. Airport Express passengers may receive one free connecting MTR journey when they use the same eligible payment method and interchange within one hour. This is a fare benefit, not a through-train: travellers still change platforms and may need to walk between connected station areas. Citybus publishes the districts and stops served by each airport route, but the current route overview does not promise one universal airport-to-centre duration. A11 and A21 make multiple stops and use roads, so compare the stop nearest the accommodation and leave traffic margin. A taxi is also road-dependent. Hong Kong taxis charge by meter for distance and waiting time, with applicable extras, rather than offering one government-set flat airport-to-city price. MTR's current adult Airport Express fares from Airport Station are HK$120 to Hong Kong, HK$105 to Kowloon and HK$73 to Tsing Yi when paid by Octopus, an eligible contactless bank card or an accepted e-wallet QR code. Adult smart tickets cost HK$130, HK$115 and HK$80 respectively. Child fares for ages 3–11 are HK$60, HK$52.50 and HK$36.50 by Child Octopus or QR code; contactless bank cards charge the adult fare and do not provide a child fare. Children under three travel free. An Octopus is a payment medium, not an Airport Express pass. The Tourist Octopus sold card costs HK$170 for an adult and contains HK$128 usable value; that purchase price is separate from the fare charged for a particular ride. A different HK$260 tourist product includes two Airport Express single journeys and HK$50 usable value. Citybus lists adult Cityflyer single fares of HK$41.90 on A11 and HK$34.60 on A21. Its same-day return offer gives 50% off the return fare only when both eligible journeys use the same Octopus or e-payment account, with no more than nine tapping records between them and the published boarding conditions met. Taxi cost is metered. From 10 May 2026, an urban taxi starts at HK$29 for the first two kilometres; distance, waiting time, luggage and applicable toll charges are added under the official tariff. A bag placed in the luggage compartment generally attracts HK$6, while wheelchairs and crutches carried by disabled passengers are free. Ask for the machine-printed receipt. From Airport Station toward the city, MTR lists the first Airport Express at 05:54 and the last at 00:48. In the reverse direction, the first and last airport-bound trains leave Hong Kong Station at 05:50 and 00:48, Kowloon at 05:53 and 00:52, and Tsing Yi at 06:00 and 00:59. These times are effective from 1 June 2026. They are scheduled departures, not a guarantee that a delayed flight will make the final train. MTR provides separate timetable links for weekdays and for Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The summary journey times remain 24 minutes from Hong Kong, 22 from Kowloon and 14 from Tsing Yi, but a traveller should use the calendar-specific timetable for intermediate departure minutes. Airport Station also serves AsiaWorld-Expo; make sure the train direction is toward the city rather than assuming every platform departure has the same destination.

Cityflyer route choice is stop-specific. The airport-route overview identifies A11 for Sheung Wan, Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and North Point, and A21 for the Kowloon corridor to Hung Hom. Use Citybus's live route search for the first departure, last departure and stop notices on the actual date. The same-day-return page itself tells passengers to check the intended route's first and last departures beforehand. Do not transfer an A11 service time to A21 or describe a published headway as a traffic-proof arrival interval. Airport Express operates on Sundays and public holidays under MTR's weekend timetable. For an early Sunday flight, work backwards from the published departure at the boarding station and add the time needed to reach that station. The 05:50 first train from Hong Kong Station is a departure time; it does not include hotel checkout, a taxi to the station, walking through the concourse or airport security. After the final Airport Express, match an overnight bus to the destination. Citybus identifies N11 between the airport and Central (Macao Ferry), serving Kowloon Station, Jordan, Tsim Sha Tsui, Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, Admiralty, Central and Sheung Wan. N21 links the airport with Tsim Sha Tsui via Tsing Yi, Mei Foo, Sham Shui Po, Prince Edward, Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei and Jordan. The current Citybus route list marks N11 and N21 as overnight routes and lists adult fares of HK$32.10 and HK$23.80 respectively. Verify the date-specific timetable and stop before boarding; “overnight” does not mean continuous turn-up-and-go service. A taxi remains available as a point-to-point option, but the fare is the meter plus applicable extras rather than a fixed night-transfer quote. All taxi types may serve the airport, though their operating areas differ after leaving it. From 1 April 2026, drivers must provide at least two electronic payment methods, including one QR and one non-QR method. Check the payment stickers before boarding if a particular method matters, retain the receipt, and leave a traffic margin for a flight. In-town check-in is not universal. MTR limits it to named airlines, eligible operated flights and valid electronic travel documents at Hong Kong or Kowloon Station during airline-specific hours.
