Hong Kong is 1,114 square kilometres carrying 7.5 million residents, the fourth-most densely populated territory on earth, and it is not one settlement but three: Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon peninsula facing it across the harbour, and the New Territories running north to the mainland border at Shenzhen.
