What's inside

Zank Höyük preserves evidence from the Early Bronze Age, Iron Age, Hellenistic period and Roman period. Reported finds include pottery fragments and vessels, stone seals, spindle whorls and a bronze arrowhead. Research also records an Iron Age handle fragment bearing a seal impression. These objects are archaeological evidence rather than a visitor display arranged on the mound. The experience is therefore based on reading the hill’s profile, its surrounding ground and the settlement history represented by the finds.

Allow around 30 to 60 minutes for a focused stop, including the approach, views of the mound and a walk around part of its base where the ground allows. Getting there

Zank Höyük is approximately 4 kilometres north-west of Sarılar settlement in Avanos district. Approach from the Sarılar direction by road. The Sarılar–Topraklı road passes about 400 metres east of the mound, and the Kırşehir–Kayseri road is approximately 11 kilometres to the north. After reaching the area, make the final approach on foot or view the mound from a safe roadside position. The site is not described with a marked car park, entrance building or transport stop.

What to watch out for

Expect an undeveloped archaeological landscape with uneven ground and a substantial mound. There is no described paved visitor route, ramp or viewing platform, and climbing the hill can be physically demanding. Wear sturdy footwear, stay on durable ground and keep away from active research areas if work is under way. Do not excavate, move stones or remove pottery. Leave room for vehicles on nearby roads and take particular care when approaching from the Sarılar–Topraklı road.
