Atatürk Mask is a monumental outdoor portrait of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk built directly into the Yeşildere hillside in İzmir’s Çaldıran area, between Buca and Konak. The concrete relief was completed and opened in 2009, transforming a steep urban slope into a single, city-scale work of public art. Its identity comes from the relationship between the enormous face, the hillside and the busy urban landscape around Yeşildere. This is a monument to understand from the surrounding public landscape, where its scale becomes more apparent than it would from a close, ground-level view. It is on the Yeşildere hills in İzmir’s Çaldıran area, between the Buca and Konak districts. The concrete relief is 42 metres high. The monument was completed and opened in 2009. Its main structure is a concrete bust with a steel supporting system.

How long to spend

Allow about 20 to 30 minutes for a focused stop at Atatürk Mask. That gives enough time to take in the complete portrait, read the inscription, observe the supporting hillside and make photographs from a safe public position. Add time if the uphill approach requires slower walking, or if you are combining the monument with Kadifekale, roughly one kilometre to the north. Because the attraction is one monumental composition rather than a sequence of galleries, the essential view can be understood quickly. A longer pause is worthwhile for appreciating how the face changes at different distances.

Season and crowds

Daylight is the most useful time to view Atatürk Mask, because the relief, steep terrain and surrounding urban roads are easier to read. Changing light affects the visibility of the facial features and makes the monument’s scale against the hillside more legible. Earlier or later daylight may be more comfortable during hot weather because the approach is exposed. After rain, take additional care with uneven ground. The best visit is a short stop in clear light, when you can remain on suitable public ground and avoid spending unnecessary time beside traffic.

Getting there

Atatürk Mask stands on the Yeşildere hillside in İzmir’s Çaldıran area, beside the Yeşildere ring road. The Yeşildere bus stop is approximately 150 metres north of the monument. That measurement does not describe a simple flat walk: the final pedestrian connection includes uphill sections and changing ground levels. Kadifekale is roughly one kilometre north, but the route between the two landmarks is not a continuous level promenade. Arriving by city bus therefore means allowing extra effort for the sloping approach and choosing crossings and viewpoints carefully around the road.

What to watch out for

The main challenge at Atatürk Mask is the hillside setting. Expect uphill movement, uneven ground and changing levels near the approach, and wear stable footwear. Keep away from traffic-facing edges, supervise children closely and stay on suitable public ground. Do not climb the monument or cross unstable surfaces to obtain a closer view. Rain can make the terrain more difficult, while strong sun can make the exposed slope uncomfortable. The large relief is best experienced from a secure position that lets you see the face without putting yourself, companions or passing traffic at risk.
