Belgrade Public Transport: Free Travel

Belgrade's integrated public-transport system is free to use, so the main visitor decision is the route rather than the ticket. The city decision applied from 1 January 2025 makes scheduled passenger transport within the integrated tariff system free for every person using it. The Tourist Organization of Belgrade confirms that the measure covers urban and suburban buses, trams, trolleybuses and BG Voz. A visitor does not need a resident card, a stored-value ticket or a reduced-fare entitlement to use those services under the published rule.

Free travel does not make the network interchangeable. The Secretariat for Public Transport maintains separate timetable groups for buses, trams, trolleybuses, night lines, BG Voz and E lines. Start with the actual origin and destination, then compare the line, stop and walking connection shown for that journey. Central Stari Grad is compact enough that walking between nearby sights may be clearer than waiting for a short ride. A cross-river trip to Novi Beograd or Zemun, a climb away from the centre, or a connection to a railway station is where the network usually becomes more useful.

Use the Secretariat's timetable and current-changes pages together. The live changes list shows roadworks and construction affecting groups of lines, not only isolated stops. It currently includes changes involving airport routes and services affected by work around the Old Sava Bridge. A route number remembered from an older guide can therefore remain real while its path or stop changes. Search the chosen line on the official site on the travel day and read any linked change notice before walking to the platform.

Treat every published departure as scheduled time, not a promise of arrival. Street traffic, construction and temporary diversions can change the useful connection even when the timetable remains visible. For BG Voz, use the date-bounded railway timetable and current operating notices; for road services, check the line timetable and active-change list. Keep enough margin for the walk to the stop and for one missed connection when the journey ends at a train, event or airport departure.

There is no fare to compare for ordinary travel inside Belgrade's integrated system. The Secretariat cites the city decision that makes the service free for all persons from 1 January 2025, and the official tourism site names city and suburban buses, trams, trolleybuses and BG Voz within that measure. On those services, a visitor does not need to buy a single ticket, load credit, validate a card or prove eligibility for a concession. Free is the current fare, not a discount restricted to residents.

That rule also changes how to judge a tourist card. Do not buy a city sightseeing or attraction product merely to obtain transport that the city already provides free. A museum discount, guided bus circuit or private transfer may still have value on its own terms, but it is not required to board the verified free network. Compare any commercial card against the admissions and services it actually includes, with the free transport component valued at zero. No official source reviewed for this page establishes a transport-only visitor pass that improves on the free city fare.

Keep the boundary of the rule visible. The decision covers scheduled passenger transport in the integrated tariff system on the territory of Belgrade. It does not say that every vehicle advertised with the words Belgrade, airport, tour or shuttle belongs to that system. Sightseeing buses, taxis, private shuttles and intercity services must be checked against their own operator terms. The A1 airport minibus is the clearest visitor example: its official page still says to buy a ticket from the driver and pay only in cash in Serbian dinars.

The A1 page checked on 8 September 2026 does not publish a price. Leave that amount unknown instead of copying a number from an old tourist page or an unofficial blog. The same discipline applies to concessions and validity: no discount, child rule, transfer condition or card acceptance is inferred for a separately ticketed product. For the free integrated network, those fare questions are unnecessary; for anything outside it, obtain the current answer from that product's own operator before boarding.

Treat the airport as a separate corridor decision within Belgrade's otherwise free city network. Lines 72, 72N and 600 are scheduled services inside the integrated system and the airport marks each free of charge. Their useful difference is the city endpoint: line 72 reaches Zeleni Venac, 72N serves Republic Square overnight, and 600 reaches Beograd Centar railway station. Choose the endpoint from the final address, then check that line's current departures rather than treating one airport route as a general city pass. A1 follows a different payment rule. It reaches Slavija Square, but the airport says its ticket is bought from the driver with Serbian-dinar cash. The checked operator page gives no current fare, so this guide does not supply an old amount. A1's separate ticket does not change the free-fare rule on the integrated lines. Use the dedicated airport-transfer guide for stop-by-stop, timetable, late-arrival and fixed-price taxi decisions. For a city-network plan, the boundary is simpler: the verified integrated lines are free, while a private shuttle, taxi, sightseeing bus or separately ticketed operator needs its own current terms. Do not extend the city decision to a product merely because it starts at the airport.

Use buses and trolleybuses for the broadest street-level reach, but choose them from the current route rather than from a generic city map. The official network has separate bus and trolleybus timetable groups, while the changes page records stop moves and diversions caused by works. This matters in a city where the direct-looking line can be slowed or rerouted by the street it uses. Check both directions: the stop across the road may not be the return stop when a temporary one-way diversion is active.

Trams are useful when their rail corridor matches the day, especially for journeys between central and New Belgrade districts, but track work and bridge projects can change the route for longer than a short event closure. The official route page for tram 9, for example, lists Slavija, Sava Square, Novi Beograd station and Block 45 while also carrying a notice about service changes connected with removal of the Old Sava Bridge. That is a planning example, not a recommendation to rely on line 9 unchanged. Open the notice attached to the selected tram before building a tight connection around it.

BG Voz is a different kind of tool: it can cross the wider city without following street traffic, but it runs to a railway timetable rather than appearing on demand. The current published schedule includes Zemun, Novi Beograd, Beograd Centar, Karađorđev Park and Vukov Spomenik on the main urban corridor, with services extending beyond the central visitor area. Match the named station to the attraction or accommodation and include the access walk. Beograd Centar is a railway station name, not a promise that every central sight is immediately outside its platforms.

The BG Voz timetable is explicitly date-bounded, and the Secretariat publishes separate operating-change notices. In February 2026 it listed temporary cancellations and altered regularity on outer services and told passengers to check current information for reliable planning. Do not turn a printed time into a frequency promise for every station, day or holiday. Read the row for the exact direction and date, then confirm any current notice before setting out.

Night lines are a named part of the official network, not proof that each daytime route runs all night. Search the night-line timetable separately. The airport's 72N page provides a concrete example: it names Republic Square and the airport as endpoints, calls the journey 30–40 minutes and states that it is free. For a late arrival elsewhere, identify the night route and final walk in advance; do not assume that the nearest daytime stop has overnight service.

The most expensive public-transport mistake in Belgrade is buying an unnecessary product because an old page still shows fares. The authoritative city rule makes integrated scheduled transport free from 1 January 2025, and the current official tourism page confirms the modes covered. Ignore old SMS codes, zone prices, validation instructions and fare-evasion penalties when they describe the superseded paid city system. A historical page can remain online after the underlying fare has changed.

The opposite mistake is extending the free-fare claim too far. It covers the integrated city and suburban network identified by the official sources, not every commercial journey sold in Belgrade. A1 requires a cash ticket from the driver; sightseeing vehicles, private airport shuttles, taxis and intercity coaches have their own terms. Check the operator identity before deciding that a vehicle is included, and keep a separately ticketed route's price unknown when the current operator page does not publish it.

Do not treat an endpoint as a hotel transfer. Zeleni Venac, Republic Square, Slavija Square and Beograd Centar are different arrival points with different onward walks and connections. Compare the full door-to-door route, particularly with luggage. Similarly, do not treat an approximate airport journey time as a departure guarantee. The airport's 30–40 minute figures exclude the wait for the vehicle and cannot account for the day's traffic or diversions.

Finally, recheck the route on the day. The Secretariat publishes planned and extraordinary changes because construction, events and street conditions alter normal service. Read the timetable, then the current notice for that line; for BG Voz, also use the railway operating update. Save or note the destination stop in Serbian spelling where practical, allow connection margin, and ask the driver or station staff when the posted diversion conflicts with the route you planned. Free travel removes the ticket calculation, but it does not remove the need to verify the service.
