Jardin Majorelle is a 9,000-square-metre botanical and artist's garden in Marrakech created by the French painter Jacques Majorelle. The official garden history says he began planting exotic specimens in 1922 and developed the property over roughly forty years as both a sanctuary and a botanical laboratory. The enclosed design combines paths on different levels with strongly coloured buildings influenced by Art Deco and Moorish architecture. Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought the garden in 1980 to prevent its replacement by a hotel development, restored it and retained its public role. The intense blue used throughout is now inseparable from the garden's identity.
