Compare Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and London City rail routes, fare rules, payment methods and late-service limits before arriving in London.
This guide is part of our London destination coverage. London
Match the airport to the London interchange
Start with the airport code, then choose the London interchange that fits the final address. Heathrow (LHR) offers Heathrow Express to Paddington, the Elizabeth line through Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon and Liverpool Street, and the Piccadilly line through the West End and King's Cross St Pancras. The shortest airport-to-Paddington leg is not automatically the shortest route to another district. (Heathrow rail guide, checked 2026-09-08)
Gatwick (LGW) is not tied to one central terminal. Gatwick Express runs non-stop to Victoria; Southern also serves Victoria and Clapham Junction; Thameslink serves London Bridge, Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon and St Pancras International. Select the train for the accommodation's side of London. The airport station is at South Terminal, with an airport shuttle from North Terminal. (Gatwick train guide, checked 2026-09-08)
Stansted (STN) trains serve Tottenham Hale and Liverpool Street. Tottenham Hale connects with the Victoria line; Liverpool Street suits the City. Coaches reach several London stops and may avoid cross-city backtracking. (Stansted Express timetable, checked 2026-09-08, Stansted coach guide, checked 2026-09-08)
Luton (LTN) requires a mainline train to Luton Airport Parkway and the Luton DART to the terminal. Book to "Luton Airport" (LUA) when the ticket should include DART; a ticket only to Parkway (LTN) does not establish inclusion. London City (LCY) has a DLR station in Zone 3, connecting with the Tube, Elizabeth line and London Overground. (Luton fare finder, checked 2026-09-08, London City transport guide, checked 2026-09-08)

Compare the whole route, not the headline time
Heathrow publishes 15 minutes between Terminals 2 and 3 and Paddington on Heathrow Express, 28 minutes between Heathrow and Paddington on the Elizabeth line, and under an hour between Heathrow terminals and central London on the Piccadilly line. These are rail legs, excluding terminal walking, waiting, changes and the final journey. Terminal 5 adds about five minutes to the Heathrow Express time. (Heathrow Express, checked 2026-09-08, TfL Elizabeth line, checked 2026-09-08)
Gatwick gives a 30-to-45-minute range for London trains; Gatwick Express lists about 30 minutes to Victoria, while Thameslink and Southern serve other stations. A slightly longer train to a nearby station can beat a faster train followed by a Tube change. Check the live date because engineering work can change the London terminal. (Gatwick train guide, checked 2026-09-08, Gatwick London guide, checked 2026-09-08)
Stansted Express publishes about 36 minutes to Tottenham Hale and 48 minutes to Liverpool Street. Immigration, baggage reclaim, the platform walk and onward travel remain outside those scheduled times. A coach may fit Paddington, Victoria, Stratford or another stop better, but road time depends on traffic. (Stansted Express timetable, checked 2026-09-08, Stansted coach guide, checked 2026-09-08)
Luton Airport Express advertises a fastest 32 minutes from St Pancras to the airport, combining a 22-minute train to Parkway with DART. Waiting and the terminal walk still matter. London City needs no separate express: compare its Zone 3 DLR connections at Canning Town, Stratford or farther west according to the address. Keep each airport fare and payment rule separate
From 1 March 2026, an adult pay-as-you-go Piccadilly journey between Heathrow and Zone 1 costs £5.90. TfL charges the peak fare at all times when a Tube or Elizabeth line journey starts or ends at Heathrow and includes Zone 1; routes avoiding Zone 1 can have a different off-peak fare. The February/March revenue update raises Elizabeth line Zone 1–Heathrow travel from £13.90 to £15.50. Use the Single Fare Finder for another station pair. (GLA 2026 fare decision, checked 2026-09-08, TfL revenue update, checked 2026-09-08, TfL Heathrow rule, checked 2026-09-08, TfL Fare Finder, checked 2026-09-08)
Heathrow Express lists a £26 Standard single and limited £10 advance singles bought at least 30 days ahead. Children aged 15 and under travel free in Standard Class under the operator's conditions. Contactless and Oyster work on Heathrow Express, Elizabeth and Piccadilly services, but Heathrow Express pay as you go is outside TfL caps and Travelcard validity. Use the same card or device at both gates, with one payment method per fare-paying traveller. (Heathrow Express, checked 2026-09-08, TfL carriage conditions, checked 2026-09-08, TfL pay as you go, checked 2026-09-08)
Gatwick accepts Oyster and contactless, but Gatwick Express and Southern charge different pay-as-you-go fares to Victoria. The gateline determines the fare, and pay as you go is not always cheaper than a return. Gatwick sits outside the advertised London Travelcard zones; eligible daily capping can apply, but the two operators are not interchangeable prices. Compare the chosen train and ticket for children, Railcards and returns. (Gatwick Express Oyster guide, checked 2026-09-08)
Stansted accepts contactless but not Oyster. Contactless supplies an adult fare and may lose against a child, Railcard, group, return or advance ticket; limited advance fares start at £9.90. At Luton, select "Luton Airport" for rail plus DART. Standalone DART singles are £4.90 adult, £2.45 for ages 5–15 and free for under-fives. London City is in TfL Zone 3. Card purchase fees and stored balances are not journey fares. Read frequency by branch, terminal and day
Heathrow Express runs every 15 minutes. The first Paddington departure is listed at 04:34 Monday to Saturday and 04:55 Sunday; the last Terminal 5 departure is 23:57 daily. The 15-minute journey applies between Paddington and Terminals 2 and 3; Terminal 5 adds about five minutes, while Terminal 4 requires a free transfer train. (Heathrow Express, checked 2026-09-08)
TfL publishes six Elizabeth line Heathrow trains an hour: all serve Terminals 2 and 3, four serve Terminal 4 and two serve Terminal 5. The central frequency therefore differs from each branch. The Piccadilly line also splits. Check the destination display. Elizabeth line inter-terminal travel is free using a contactless touch that is not charged or a free machine-issued transfer ticket. (TfL Elizabeth line at Heathrow, checked 2026-09-08)
Gatwick says a train leaves on average every four minutes across all operators, but Gatwick Express itself runs twice hourly to Victoria. Those trains have different destinations and stops. Stansted Express publishes daytime departures every 15 minutes, seven days a week. Engineering work can alter both patterns. (Gatwick train guide, checked 2026-09-08, Stansted timetable, checked 2026-09-08)
Luton Airport Express advertises half-hourly Monday-to-Saturday service and regular Sunday trains. DART is a separate 24-hour link. Its direct operator currently describes peak shuttles up to every four minutes, daytime off-peak service every seven minutes and four to six services per hour from 22:00 to 04:00. Those are scheduled intervals, not a guarantee that a connecting mainline train runs through the night. London City publishes a DLR connection rather than a fixed airport-express interval; use TfL's live planner. Build late and Sunday plans from live departures
Late service differs by airport, terminal and night. Piccadilly Night Tube runs Friday and Saturday nights, but TfL identifies the overnight Heathrow branch as Terminal 5 through Terminals 2 and 3, excluding Terminal 4. Night Tube therefore does not prove every terminal has the same service. Check Elizabeth line departures by station and date. (TfL Night Tube, checked 2026-09-08, Piccadilly first and last trains, checked 2026-09-08)
Stansted Express lists first London departures at 03:40 on Monday, Friday and Saturday, 04:10 Sunday, and 04:40 Tuesday through Thursday. The first airport-to-London train is later; the last regular Stansted departure is listed at 00:30. Temporary Friday-night summer trains are labelled separately, so use the date-specific result. (Stansted Express timetable, checked 2026-09-08)
At Luton, DART runs overnight but the onward train may not. Confirm the mainline departure before relying on 24-hour DART. Gatwick's shared station has several operators; a late Thameslink service and daytime Gatwick Express need not use the same London terminal. London City's DLR is not described by the airport as 24-hour. (Luton DART, checked 2026-09-08, Gatwick train guide, checked 2026-09-08, London City transport guide, checked 2026-09-08)
For Sunday departures, work backwards from the airline's required terminal time and add terminal walking, the airport leg, interchanges and a trip-specific disruption margin. There is no universal airport buffer or fixed taxi time. Coaches may be useful at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, but the booked stop, ticket conditions and road timetable are route-specific. Check official journey planners immediately before travel.

Common questions
Which Heathrow train should I take?
Choose by the final London interchange. Heathrow Express is direct to Paddington; the Elizabeth line continues through several West End and City stations; the Piccadilly line serves stops including King's Cross St Pancras, Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus.
Can I use contactless for every London airport train?
No single rule covers every airport. Contactless works on TfL services, Gatwick routes and Stansted Express, but Oyster is not valid at Stansted Airport. A contactless fare can also differ from an advance, child, Railcard, group or return ticket.
Is Heathrow Express always the fastest route to my hotel?
It is the fastest published Heathrow-to-Paddington rail leg at 15 minutes from Terminals 2 and 3, but not necessarily the fastest door-to-door route. The Elizabeth or Piccadilly line may avoid a change for the final address.
Does a ticket to Luton Airport Parkway include the DART?
Not automatically. London Luton Airport tells passengers to choose "Luton Airport" (LUA) when the rail fare should include DART. A ticket ending at "Luton Airport Parkway" (LTN) may require a separate DART fare.
Can I use Oyster on the Stansted Express?
Oyster is not valid for travel to or from Stansted Airport. Stansted Express now accepts pay-as-you-go contactless for the full airport journey, or you can buy a valid ticket. Use the same card or device at both gates.
Does the Night Tube serve every Heathrow terminal?
No. TfL's current Piccadilly line first-and-last-train document describes the Friday and Saturday overnight branch as serving Terminal 5 through Terminals 2 and 3 and explicitly excludes Terminal 4. Check the live route for the travel date.
