Istanbul Airport Transfers: IST and SAW

Start by checking the airport code on the booking. Istanbul Airport is IST on the European side; Sabiha Gökçen is SAW on the Asian side. A route that works from one does not automatically work from the other, so do not search simply for an airport bus to central Istanbul. Choose the airport first, then the part of the city where the accommodation is located.

For IST, the rail option is M11. Metro İstanbul's network information identifies M11 interchanges at Gayrettepe with M2 and at Kağıthane with M7. Those interchanges matter more than a generic claim that the airport has a metro: a traveller staying near an M2 or M7 stop may find the rail network useful, while another destination may make a direct airport bus more practical. The official sources reviewed here do not publish one fixed airport-to-centre journey time or one airport-station first or last departure, so use the live timetable for the planned date.

For SAW, M4 runs from Kadıköy to Sabiha Gökçen Airport. M4 connects with Marmaray at Ayrılık Çeşmesi, metrobüs at Ünalan, M8 at Kozyatağı, and an IETT connection to Pendik YHT at Pendik. These are useful distribution points, not a guarantee that a particular hotel is close to the exit or that a transfer will still be running after a delayed flight. Allow separately for the station walk, luggage, and the last local connection.

M4 is the clearest published rail reference in this comparison. Metro İstanbul lists 23 stations, a 52-minute one-way line duration, and a route from Kadıköy to Sabiha Gökçen Airport. That duration describes the line, not an end-to-end journey from a hotel, because reaching Kadıköy or another interchange can require another service and a walk. It should not be turned into a promised arrival time at an airport check-in desk.

IST has several non-rail options as well. IETT lists airport lines including H-1 from Mahmutbey Metro, H-2 from Mecidiyeköy, H-3 from Halkalı, and H-6 from the Arnavutköy and Mescid-i Selam side. Havaist also directs passengers to choose their direction on its live timetable. Havaist explains that published departures are main-stop times and that an intermediate-stop arrival can vary with traffic. For that reason, this guide does not attach a generic duration or a named fare to a Havaist journey.

SAW also has more than one bus route. IETT lists E-3, E-9, E-10, E-11, 16S, SG-1, SG-2, 122H and 132H among the airport connections. SG-2 is a Taksim–SAW special-tariff route; IETT describes it as passenger-demand service and publishes a scheduled one-way duration of 113 minutes. Read the current route page before selecting it: a special-tariff airport service should not be assumed to accept the same payment or follow the same timing as an ordinary city bus.

Do not use the price of a card as if it were the price of an airport journey. İstanbulkart's official tariff lists a card purchase fee and several limited-use products, but the reviewed tariff page does not establish which airport services accept each product, the current full-fare airport price, or whether a visitor can use each option. A physical card, its stored balance, and the fare charged by a particular gate or airport bus are separate costs.

The official tariff also lists BİRgeç through ONgeç products and an SMS QR product. Those names are not enough to recommend them to an arriving visitor. The current source reviewed here does not state their visitor eligibility, validity period, transfer rules, airport acceptance, or value against a normal balance card. Leave those details open until an official product page supplies them.

BELBİM announced in April 2026 that ConetPass would offer visitors a multilingual, single-use QR route to public transport including airport connections. The announcement is evidence that a visitor-facing digital option exists; it is not a tariff. It does not give this guide a price, precise network coverage, validity period, refund rule, or airport-product rule. Check the product's current official purchase flow before presenting it as a solution.

Personalisation can matter for local benefits, but it is not a shortcut for airport planning. An IETT holiday notice limits that free-travel offer to personalised İstanbulkart and expressly excludes SG-1 and SG-2. That narrow exception does not prove a visitor can obtain a personalisation benefit or that a special airport bus uses an ordinary fare. Keep the payment question open until the selected route and card product are both confirmed.

Metro İstanbul publishes M4 operating hours of 06:00–00:00 and a five-minute peak frequency. These figures help a traveller identify a daytime rail window, but they do not replace the timetable for the airport platform. The line's listed opening and closing times are not a promise that the last train from a particular station will meet a flight, especially after baggage collection or a late terminal exit.

For IST, the official sources reviewed here establish the M11 interchange pattern but do not give this page a current airport-station first or last train time. The safest practical instruction is to check the operator's live service information after the flight date, terminal, and city destination are known. Do the same for Havaist, whose timetable is direction-specific and subject to traffic variation at intermediate stops.

IETT's night-lines page includes H-2 Mecidiyeköy–IST and H-6 Yunus Emre Mahallesi–IST. That makes them relevant late-travel routes to check, but it does not supply a published departure that can be promised in advance. The page also lists E-10 between SAW and Kadıköy among night lines. A line appearing in a night-service list is a prompt to read its live schedule, not a substitute for one.

For a late arrival, build the journey from the final address backwards. Confirm the airport, terminal, rail or bus service, interchange, and final local connection on the same date. A route can look workable until a long walk, a baggage delay, a closed station entrance, or the last connection after the airport leg is counted. The official operator sources reviewed for this page do not publish one universal late-arrival plan for Istanbul.

Sunday and holiday travel need the same check. The M4 page gives a general operating window, while IETT and Havaist route pages provide route-specific information that can change with the day or service conditions. Holiday notices may have special rules, and IETT expressly lists exceptions for SG-1 and SG-2 in its personalised-card free-travel notice. Do not assume a holiday announcement makes an airport route free or changes its special tariff.

Keep a fallback decision separate from the public-transport plan. If the current operator timetable does not reach the needed interchange with enough time for the final connection, use an official airport, rail, or bus source to re-plan before leaving the terminal. This page does not record a taxi fare, a private-transfer quote, or a universal time advantage because none was verified in the official sources used here.
