Sobesos is an open archaeological site in Şahinefendi village, within Ürgüp district of Nevşehir. Discovered in 2002, it preserves the remains of a small rural town that began in the 4th century CE. The excavated area brings together public, domestic and religious architecture, offering a grounded view of settlement life in Cappadocia beyond the region’s better-known rock-cut landscapes. Because the site is outdoors, the experience is a walk among exposed foundations, rooms and mosaic surfaces rather than a conventional museum visit. Its location on the Ürgüp–Soğanlı road makes Sobesos a practical stop for travellers exploring southern Cappadocia by car.

What's inside

The visible remains cover several kinds of ancient building. Excavations have revealed a bath complex, Villa I and a cemetery chapel, representing public, domestic and religious functions within the settlement. Mosaic floors are among the site’s most distinctive details, with geometric and vegetal decoration still forming readable patterns across the excavated spaces. Look especially for the sandal motif near the entrance to Frigidarium II, a small but memorable feature that rewards close observation. The open layout lets you compare rooms and structures in sequence, while the exposed archaeology keeps the emphasis on scale, materials and surviving traces rather than reconstructed spectacle. Plan around 45 to 75 minutes for a useful visit to Sobesos. A shorter circuit is enough to see the principal excavated structures and the most prominent mosaics, while a slower visit gives you time to distinguish the bath complex, Villa I and the cemetery chapel and to examine the decorative floors closely. The site is compact compared with a large ancient city, but it is not simply a single viewpoint: the outdoor walkway links separate excavated areas and invites a measured circuit. Sobesos is open every day, with the summer schedule applying on 2 September 2026: 09:00–18:45. The ticket office closes at 18:40, so arriving before the final five minutes matters even though the archaeological area remains listed until 18:45. The site closes for a midday break from 12:00 to 13:00, making early morning or mid-afternoon the simplest choices for a continuous visit. Outdoor conditions shape the experience: summer sun can make the exposed walkway and mosaics tiring, while softer morning or late-afternoon light is more comfortable and useful for photography. Getting there

Sobesos is in Şahinefendi village, Ürgüp, Nevşehir, at the address listed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as 50400 Şahinefendi/Ürgüp/Nevşehir. The site is reached by road from Ürgüp toward Soğanlı, with the entrance in the village area. It is about 25 kilometres from Ürgüp, so a private car or taxi is the practical choice for most visitors. Build it into a wider route rather than treating it as a central walking attraction: road time, village approaches and the return journey all matter. Sobesos is an exposed archaeological area, so prepare for sun, uneven ground and changing outdoor conditions. The official listing identifies parking, but circulation is only partly step-free: the walkway between excavated structures does not provide fully step-free access across the whole site. Visitors who need continuous accessible routes should treat the visit as limited rather than expect every area to be reached. Wear shoes with secure soles, carry water and avoid rushing across the excavations. The midday closure from 12:00 to 13:00 also affects timing, and the ticket office stops service at 18:40. Protect the mosaics by staying on the visitor route and never touching the surfaces.
