Göreme Valley is a carved-rock settlement and archaeological landscape in Cappadocia, presented by the responsible ministry through the Göreme Open-Air Museum. It is both a natural and cultural asset, where volcanic rock formations surround spaces shaped for communal and religious life. The site is regarded as the place where the monastic education system began. Intensive monastic life continued here from the 4th to the 13th century CE. Göreme Open-Air Museum joined the UNESCO World Heritage List on 6 December 1985. The attraction is therefore a valley setting of rock-cut architecture, paths, churches and chapels rather than one enclosed museum building.
