İzmir Wildlife Park

İzmir Wildlife Park is a large municipal zoological park in Sasalı, within Çiğli district of İzmir. The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality describes the site as covering 425,000 square metres, so the experience is built around spacious outdoor routes rather than a compact city-zoo circuit. Visitors come for a broad collection of animals, family facilities and open-air walking in the northern İzmir countryside. The scale makes the park suitable for a substantial half-day outing, especially when younger visitors need time to explore at their own pace. It is best understood as a destination for an extended family visit, not a quick indoor attraction between city-centre stops.

The municipality says the park holds more than 125 species and nearly 1,500 animals. The official list includes Asian elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippopotamuses, lions, tigers, bears, wolves and cheetahs, together with birds of prey, reptiles and tropical species. The Children’s Zoo provides a gentler introduction to animal life, with small horses, dwarf goats, Cameroon sheep, rabbits, poultry, dogs, donkeys, and land and water tortoises. Kuğulu Café, Develi Café, a gift shop and four children’s playgrounds provide useful pauses between enclosures and walking sections. The variety means adults can focus on major mammals while children have a separate, approachable area with familiar domestic animals.

Allow at least three hours for a purposeful visit, and plan closer to half a day if you want to follow the walking paths slowly, spend time at the Children’s Zoo, use the playgrounds or stop at one of the cafés. The 425,000-square-metre setting is spread out rather than compressed into a short loop, so the route naturally takes longer than a small urban zoo. Families should add time for snack stops, playground breaks and the slower pace of younger children, particularly at busy weekends. A longer visit also gives you time to pause at large-animal enclosures instead of hurrying from one section to the next.

The park is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays. Tuesday to Friday hours are 09:00–17:00, while Saturday and Sunday hours are 09:00–18:00. Arriving near opening gives you the longest practical window and more time to cover the spread-out route before closing. Weekend visitors benefit from the later closing time but should expect stronger family demand. Base adult admission is 100 TL, while student admission is 50 TL. Children aged 0–6 enter free. İzmir Wildlife Park is in Sasalı, Çiğli. Bus 777 runs from Karşıyaka Ferry Pier, while bus 751 runs from Çiğli Transfer Centre. Visitors arriving by İZBAN can change at Çiğli Transfer Centre for bus 751. By car, follow Anadolu Caddesi and Cahar Dudayev Boulevard via Sasalı and the Tuzla Bird Paradise road. The site has a 500-vehicle car park, making driving practical for families carrying food, spare clothes or other equipment for a longer outdoor visit. Public transport requires attention to the transfer point. The route from İZBAN is therefore not direct: the practical connection is to reach Çiğli Transfer Centre and continue on bus 751.

This is a broad outdoor park, so comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and water are sensible preparations. The walking paths are extensive, and the visit can take several hours; younger children may need cafés or playgrounds as planned pauses. Mondays are closed, and weekday closing is earlier than at weekends. The park records free wheelchairs for individual disabled and elderly visitors.
