Atatürk, Annesi ve Kadın Hakları Anıtı
Reviewed by Elena Voss · SSMTour Travel Editor
This place is a Memorial. It was established in 1973. It is built of concrete.
Atatürk, His Mother and Women's Rights Monument is a landmark in Anayasa Meydanı, Tuna, on Karşıyaka’s İzmir waterfront. Its present structure reopened in 2018 after the original 1972 monument was rebuilt. The bronze belt around the 41.7-metre form shows Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, his mother Zübeyde Hanım and Turkish women from different professions. That combination gives the monument a distinctive civic focus: it links the memory of Atatürk and his mother with the public recognition of women’s lives, work and rights. Because it stands in a working square beside the shore, the monument is experienced as part memorial, part urban meeting point and part orientation landmark for a walk through central Karşıyaka.

The monument’s scale is easiest to understand from the open space of Anayasa Meydanı, which covers 7,000 square metres. Look first at the complete vertical structure, then approach the bronze belt to examine the figures and the way the composition turns a large civic symbol into a human story. Beneath the monument, the Kadına Saygı Sergisi occupies a 110-square-metre exhibition area. It presents the stories of approximately 100 women who shaped the history of the Republic, adding biographical depth to the outdoor monument’s broader statement about women and public life. The square and exhibition offer different kinds of attention: one is spatial and architectural, the other is intimate and narrative.

Set aside about 25 to 40 minutes for the monument, Anayasa Meydanı and the immediate waterfront setting. This is enough time to see the 41.7-metre structure from several positions, walk around its base, study the bronze belt and make both wide and close photographs. A brief stop works when the monument is part of a ferry-to-tram journey or a longer coastal walk. If you spend time with the Kadına Saygı Sergisi and its stories of approximately 100 women, allow extra time beyond the outdoor visit. The landmark rewards a slower look because its full height and smaller figures communicate different parts of its meaning.

Choose the timing according to the experience you want in Karşıyaka. Morning is useful for a calmer look at the monument and for photographs in which the tall structure stands clearly against the sky. Later afternoon brings more of the waterfront’s everyday movement and can give the bronze belt warmer tones. A clear day makes the relationship between the monument, the broad square and the shoreline easier to read. The setting is especially suited to combining a visit with a promenade, ferry arrival or tram journey, so the best moment may be the point at which the monument naturally falls into your route.

The Kadına Saygı Sergisi is a distinct enclosed exhibition beneath the monument, not simply another part of the open square. Treat the monument and exhibition as separate elements of the visit: the first is the waterfront landmark, while the second is the focused display about women who shaped the Republic.

By tram, use the Karşıyaka İskele stop on İzmir’s Karşıyaka Tramvayı green line, then continue on foot through the central waterfront area to Anayasa Meydanı. By ferry, arrive at Karşıyaka Vapur İskelesi with İZDENİZ and continue along the shore toward the monument. The pier and tram stop serve the same central Karşıyaka district, making this an easy place to combine with a coastal walk or a crossing from the opposite side of İzmir Bay. Transport services vary by day and time, so consult İzmir Metropolitan Municipality’s transport information and the official İZDENİZ sailing information before setting out.

The important distinction is between an open-air civic monument and the enclosed exhibition beneath it. Anayasa Meydanı is an active public square, so the atmosphere changes with pedestrian movement, waterfront activity and the time of day. Give yourself a distant view before approaching: the 41.7-metre height is most legible across the square, while the bronze belt’s figures need a closer position. Visitors who want the exhibition should plan it as a separate part of the stop, since its storytelling requires more attention than a quick look around the monument.

Start from across Anayasa Meydanı so the entire 41.7-metre monument rises within its 7,000-square-metre urban setting. A wider frame can include the Karşıyaka waterfront and make the location immediately recognisable. Move closer for the bronze belt, where Atatürk, Zübeyde Hanım and Turkish women from different professions become the photograph’s subject rather than small details on a tall structure. Vary the viewpoint around the monument: distance explains its architecture, while proximity reveals the figures and the civic message. Morning can provide a cleaner sky and quieter composition; late afternoon may bring warmer light to the bronze.
