About Sagrada Família

The Sagrada Família is a Catholic basilica in the Eixample district of Barcelona that has been under construction since 1882 and is still not finished. The diocesan architect Francisco de Paula del Villar drew the first, neo-Gothic design, and Bishop Urquinaona laid the cornerstone on 19 March 1882. A disagreement over the cost of materials removed del Villar the following year, and Antoni Gaudí took the commission over in 1883 and redirected it entirely. What's inside

The standard ticket admits a visitor to the basilica and to the museum, for as long as they care to stay, and the operator states plainly that it does not cover the towers or the crypt. The museum sets out the history, the technique and the symbolism, and the Liturgical path is walked separately. Two towers can be added to a ticket, one on the Nativity façade looking over eastern Barcelona and one on the Passion façade looking towards the city centre. The operator lists no recurring closure day. Management may occasionally modify opening times or days for special events inside the Basilica.

How long to spend

The operator publishes its own figures and they are the ones to plan against. A basilica ticket is given an approximate duration of one hour. A ticket that adds a tower is given one hour thirty minutes. A guided tour lasts approximately fifty minutes and is quoted, with the rest of the visit, as one hour; the guided tour explicitly excludes the museum and the Liturgical path, which are walked afterwards without a guide. Three things stretch it. General individual admission is €26 per person. It includes the Basilica, museum and app-based audioguide; towers and crypt are excluded.

Season and crowds

Opening hours run on three seasons and they are worth reading rather than guessing. From November through February the basilica opens Monday to Saturday 09:00–18:00 and Sunday 10:30–18:00. In March and October it is Monday to Friday 09:00–19:00, Saturday 09:00–18:00, Sunday 10:30–19:00. There is no weekly closing day and no midday break. November–February: Monday–Saturday 09:00–18:00; Sunday 10:30–18:00. March and October: Monday–Friday 09:00–19:00; Saturday 09:00–18:00; Sunday 10:30–19:00. April–September: Monday–Friday 09:00–20:00; Saturday 09:00–18:00; Sunday 10:30–20:00. Special hours on 1 and 6 January and 25 and 26 December: 09:00–14:00.

Tickets

Prices are per person and there are four individual products. The basilica with the audioguide app is 26 €. The basilica with a guided tour is 30 €. The basilica with a tower is 36 €. The basilica with both a guided tour and a tower is 40 €. Under-11s are free on every product. General individual admission is €26 per person. It includes the Basilica, museum and app-based audioguide; towers and crypt are excluded. The Basilica is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, except for the towers. Visitors with disabilities or reduced mobility should use entrance B on Carrer de la Marina.

Getting there

No car is needed and none is wanted. The basilica sits on Carrer de Mallorca 401 in the Eixample, on a block bounded by Carrer de la Marina, and the metro station beneath it is called Sagrada Família and is served by two lines, L2 and L5. Use Sagrada Família metro station on lines L2 or L5, or buses 19, 33, 34, D50, H10 or B24. Individual visitors enter through the general entrance on the Nativity façade on Carrer de la Marina. Visitors with disabilities or reduced mobility should use entrance B on Carrer de la Marina.

What to watch out for

Everything entering the building is screened. Bags, rucksacks, luggage, personal items and photographic equipment are checked at the door, food and drink from outside are refused, and the operator recommends leaving rucksacks behind entirely to move faster. There are no lockers for suitcases. Bare shoulders are not admitted to the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament. The Basilica is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, except for the towers. Wheelchairs can be requested at entrance B, subject to availability. Guide dogs are admitted when required by a visitor with a disability.

Photography

The published rules are narrower than at most museums and worth reading before packing a camera. Tripods may not be used for photographs or video anywhere on the grounds without prior accreditation from the press department. Professional photo, video and sound-recording equipment is not allowed inside the basilica at all, except for media outlets holding written authorisation in advance.
