About Sky Tower

Sky Tower is Auckland's 328-metre observation tower at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets in the SkyCity precinct. The tower is a vertical city-centre visit rather than a museum complex: its value is the changing 360-degree view across Tāmaki Makaurau, including the harbour, volcanic cones and the surrounding city. What's inside

A standard admission gives access to three observation levels. SkyCity places the Main Observation level on Level 51, 186 metres above street level; The Lookout on Level 53, 192 metres up; and the Sky Deck on Level 60, 220 metres up. Each is part of the same tower visit, not a separate landmark. The operator states that Sky Tower opens 365 days a year, with no regular closure day. It may close because of adverse weather. How long to spend

Allow 90 minutes for Sky Tower. That leaves time to ride up, move between the three viewing levels and wait for a clearer view without forcing the visit into a rushed lift-to-lift stop. Getting there

Sky Tower's entrance is at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets, in central Auckland. The SkyCity visitor information places Waitematā Station about a 12-minute walk away, Aotea Square about seven minutes away and the ferry terminals about 11 minutes away. The dedicated Sky Tower entrance is at the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets. Waitematā Station, Auckland's main train and bus terminal, is approximately a 12-minute walk away; buses also stop nearby on Albert Street, Wellesley Street and Queen Street. The recommended taxi and rideshare drop-off and pick-up point is outside SkyCity Hotel and Casino on Federal Street.

What to watch out for

The main trap is treating Sky Tower as a guaranteed clear-weather stop. SkyCity says that adverse weather can close the tower, and private events can close an observation level. Keep a flexible alternative in central Auckland and do not leave the visit to the final admission window. The operator describes Sky Tower as fully wheelchair accessible. Toilets are available at the base of Sky Tower and on the Main Observation Level. The observation levels are reached by elevators.

The useful Sky Tower photographs are the broad city views from the observation levels and the tower itself from surrounding streets. For a skyline image, work with the actual weather rather than assuming the long-distance view will be clear; SkyCity says the panorama can reach 80 kilometres in favourable conditions.
