Budapest Airport: 100E, 200E or Taxi

For most first-time arrivals staying in central Pest, 100E Airport Express is the simplest public-transport choice. It runs directly between Liszt Ferenc International Airport and Deák Ferenc tér, serving Kálvin tér on the way. BKK describes the scheduled city-centre journey as about 40 minutes. Both endpoints and Kálvin tér connect with Budapest's wider network, but the special 100E ticket covers only the uninterrupted airport-bus ride; it does not include the metro, tram or bus used after you get off. Choose 200E when a regular BKK fare or pass suits you and changing vehicles is acceptable. The bus runs between Terminal 2 and Kőbánya-Kispest during the day, where metro M3 and other services continue toward the city. At night it extends to Határ út for connections with night buses. The route also stops at Ferihegy railway station, where trains serve Nyugati station; Terminal 2 itself has no railway platform, so this option always includes the 200E link. For a door-to-door trip, compare the airport's official miniBUD shuttle with a regulated taxi. Shared shuttle timing depends on other passengers and addresses, while taxi cost depends on distance and time. Neither should be described as having one universal journey time. BKK publishes approximately 40 minutes for 100E between the airport and the city centre. Treat that as a scheduled route time, not a door-to-door guarantee. Baggage collection, the walk to the arrivals-level bus stop, boarding, road traffic and the connection from Deák Ferenc tér or Kálvin tér all add time. The 200E route is usually a multi-stage journey. By day, change at Kőbánya-Kispest for metro M3 or another service. For the rail alternative, leave 200E at Ferihegy railway station and use a train toward Nyugati. Budapest Airport gives about 30 minutes for the train between Ferihegy and the city centre, but that figure excludes the bus between Terminal 2 and Ferihegy, the interchange and waiting time. A taxi or miniBUD can reduce navigation with luggage because it goes toward a specific address. The airport does not publish one fixed taxi total: the regulated meter combines a base fare, distance and time, and Főtaxi prepares an estimate from the destination before departure. miniBUD publishes a starting per-person price rather than a guaranteed price for every address or party. The full 100E airport shuttle bus single ticket is 2,500 HUF. It is valid for one uninterrupted one-way trip on 100E and does not cover a transfer to another line. BKK also sells a 1,000 HUF add-on airport ticket, but only to holders of a qualifying valid Budapest pass other than the 15-day pass, a Pest County Pass or a Hungary Pass. This is a route-specific concession, not a general visitor discount. Buying and validation are separate issues unless you use the Pay&GO device on 100E, where a bank card buys and validates the special ticket in one action. A paper airport ticket still needs the boarding procedure, and a mobile ticket must be validated as BKK instructs. The 200E accepts regular BKK tickets, multi-day travelcards and passes; the special 100E tickets are not accepted. A 500 HUF single ticket covers one vehicle and does not allow a bus-to-metro transfer, so a 200E-plus-M3 trip needs another valid fare or a transfer-capable product. BKK lists 100E as a round-the-clock, seven-day service. Its published pattern is every 6–10 minutes during the daytime on Mondays and Fridays, every 7–10 minutes during the daytime on the other days, every 10–15 minutes in mornings and evenings, and an average 30–40 minutes at night. The direction matters because the stop pattern is not identical at every hour. Budapest Airport lists Kálvin tér and Deák Ferenc tér for the central route and says Astoria is a city-bound drop-off; in the airport-bound direction, Astoria is served only overnight, from 00:04 to 04:47 in the published timetable summary. Do not wait at Astoria for a daytime airport bus. Deák Ferenc tér or Kálvin tér is the safer published boarding choice for daytime departures, subject to live service information. Bus 200E also operates day and night. During daytime operation it connects Terminal 2 with Kőbánya-Kispest. Budapest Airport says that overnight, roughly 23:00–04:00 on weekdays and 00:00–04:00 at weekends, it continues to Határ út, where listed night buses serve the centre and other districts. Those ranges explain the network pattern but are not a substitute for a dated itinerary. A late flight may arrive while metro M3 is closed even though 200E is still running. Sunday does not remove the airport-bus choices: BKK describes 100E as operating every day and both 100E and 200E as part of the all-night network. What changes overnight is the interval and the connection after 200E. If metro M3 is no longer running, stay on the published night pattern toward Határ út and use the live journey planner to select a listed night bus for the final address. Do not assume a daytime change at Kőbánya-Kispest will work after the metro closes. For a taxi arrival, use the official stands at the entrances of Terminals 2A and 2B. Budapest Airport names Főtaxi as its taxi service and publishes the regulated airport meter components: a 2,100 HUF base fare, 520 HUF per kilometre and 130 HUF per minute. The stand prepares an estimate for the exact address before the trip; the components do not establish one flat city-centre fare. The airport also lists miniBUD as its official shuttle and publishes a starting price of 2,499 HUF per person to the city centre, including baggage and child seats. The words “from” and “per person” matter: confirm the current quote and pickup instructions for the address and group before relying on that figure. No researched official page establishes a universal late-night transfer time, a fixed taxi total or guaranteed connection after a delayed flight. For an early departure, work backwards from the required terminal arrival, then check the live first leg and any interchange rather than adding an invented standard buffer.
