About Bodrum Castle

Bodrum Castle is a medieval fortress on a rocky peninsula between Bodrum’s two harbours, in the centre of town. The Knights of St John built it between 1406 and 1522, and the complex now houses the Bodrum Underwater Archaeology Museum. Fortified walls, named towers, inner-castle sections and harbour-facing views make the visit both a historic monument and an archaeological museum. The rocky setting is central to the experience: Bodrum Castle is explored on foot across changing levels rather than through one single-level exhibition hall. Its waterfront position makes it one of Bodrum’s defining landmarks.

What's inside

The Bodrum Underwater Archaeology Museum displays finds from underwater research around Bodrum and the Eastern Mediterranean. Exhibits include amphorae and other material connected with shipwreck archaeology, including discoveries from research near Bodrum. The castle’s architecture remains part of the route: seven gates lead towards the inner castle, and the complex has French, Italian, English, German and Spanish towers, with the Spanish tower also called the Snake Tower. Museum rooms, historic masonry and elevated viewpoints appear together, linking the displayed objects to the maritime landscape outside. Expect stairs and changing levels between sections.

How long to spend

Allow about two hours for a useful first visit to Bodrum Castle. That gives time for the principal underwater-archaeology displays, the main castle landmarks and several harbour viewpoints without treating every stop as a rushed pass-through. A ninety-minute visit can cover the essential museum rooms and architecture, but stairs, uneven surfaces and photography will make the pace brisk. Season and crowds

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism lists Bodrum Castle’s museum as open every day from 08:30 to 18:45 for the standard daytime visit. Night museology is listed every day from 19:00 to 22:00, and the night ticket office closes at 21:30. Morning hours suit a longer exploration of the fortress before the day becomes busier, while the evening period gives the towers and harbour a different atmosphere. Leave time between the daytime closing and night opening, and do not plan to buy a night ticket after the stated 21:30 ticket-office closing time.

Tickets

General admission is listed as €20 per person. Turkish citizens may use MüzeKart for standard visits. Night museology has a separate listed price of 200 TL per person for eligible MüzeKart holders with a Turkish ID number. That amount is conditional and should not be treated as a universal night price or as the same ticket as daytime general admission. Match the ticket to the period you intend to visit and the eligibility stated by the operator. The published admission cases use different currencies and conditions, so keep them as separate amounts rather than converting one into the other.

Getting there

Use Çarşı Mahallesi, Kale Caddesi No:36, Bodrum as the arrival point. Bodrum Castle stands on the rocky peninsula between the town’s two harbours, directly in the centre and close to the waterfront. From the harbour area, look towards the prominent fortress and follow the approach to the historic entrance. The central location makes the castle easy to combine with a harbour walk and nearby town streets. The approach and interior include gates and changing levels, so a central address does not mean a completely step-free visit. Check whether you are planning daytime or night entry.
