Ulucanlar Prison Museum occupies Ankara’s former Ulucanlar Prison, built in 1925 as the first prison of the Republic of Türkiye. The prison closed in 2006, and Altındağ Municipality restored the complex before reopening it as a museum on 15 June 2011. The preserved building is the subject of the visit: its wards, walls, circulation spaces and restricted rooms show how a working prison was organised. The site is also connected with journalists, writers, poets and politicians who were held there. Ulucanlar is therefore both a historical museum and a place of memory in Ankara’s Altındağ district. Ulucanlar Prison Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 and closed on Monday. The ticket counter closes at 16:30, so arriving near 17:00 is not a practical way to see the museum. The official record contains a season-related field with an unreliable label, but the published daily schedule states 10:00–17:00 and gives the 16:30 ticket deadline.
