Qatar is a peninsula of 11,581 square kilometres with a single land border, Saudi Arabia to the south, and the Gulf on every other side. More than 80 per cent of its people live in Doha, so the country and its capital are close to the same trip: the museums, the corniche, the rebuilt souq and the towers of West Bay all sit one short drive apart. Beyond the city the land is flat, low desert, and what visitors go out for are day trips — the inland sea in the south, the fort at Al Zubarah in the northwest. Nothing on that list needs an overnight stay.

Qatar National Library is a major cultural institution in Doha, opened in 2017 and designed by renowned architect Rem Koolhaas. The building features a striking geometric form with a folded roof structure and extensive glass facades.
East-West/West-East is a public art installation by American sculptor Richard Serra, located in the Brouq Nature Reserve northwest of Doha. Commissioned by Qatar Museums, the work consists of four steel plates arranged in a line across a desert plain.

Three to five days is enough for Doha museums, Souq Waqif, the Corniche and one desert or northern-coast outing. Qatar is compact, so changing hotels rarely saves time; add a night when a stadium event or long stopover limits the hours available for sightseeing.
Use Visit Qatar’s official visa checker for the passport you will actually carry. Qatar may offer visa-free entry, visa on arrival or require advance permission depending on nationality and journey, so verify the conditions again if Doha is only a stopover or the itinerary changes.
Doha Metro links Hamad International Airport with major urban districts, while buses and taxis fill gaps around the city. Desert, mangrove and northern sites generally need a road transfer or licensed excursion; check the final return arrangement before leaving the metro corridor.
November to March gives the most comfortable conditions for outdoor Doha and desert time. In hotter months, build the day around indoor museums and reserve exposed walks for morning or evening; event dates can also change hotel supply and transport demand.
Qatar uses the Qatari riyal. Electronic payment is widespread in Doha, but a modest cash reserve is useful for small purchases and situations where a terminal is unavailable; check the displayed QAR total before accepting card conversion or a taxi fare.
