About Loggia del Mercato Nuovo

Loggia del Mercato Nuovo is the Renaissance market loggia in Piazza del Mercato Nuovo in central Florence. Giovan Battista del Tasso rebuilt the earlier structure between 1449 and 1551 for Cosimo I. The covered space originally held the silk and precious-fabrics market. Its corner niches now contain nineteenth-century statues of Michele di Lando, chronicler Giovanni Villani and printing pioneer Bernardo Cennini. In the centre of the floor, the Pietra dello Scandalo, or Scandal Stone, marks the place associated with the punishment of insolvent debtors and traders.

The site is also called Loggia del Porcellino and the Straw Market. “Porcellino” refers to the popular boar fountain beside the loggia: the sculpture visible here is a copy of Pietro Tacca’s seventeenth-century work, whose original is held by Museo Stefano Bardini. The Straw Market name recalls the Florentine straw hats sold under the loggia from the nineteenth century. Today the stalls primarily sell leather goods and souvenirs.

The official Florence tourism listing gives the market trading hours as 09:00–18:30 Monday through Sunday, with closures on 25 and 26 December and 1 January. Those hours describe the tourist market operating beneath the loggia. The source does not publish a separate opening-and-closing schedule for viewing the architectural structure itself, so the market timetable should not be presented as a monument access restriction. The address is Piazza del Mercato Nuovo, Florence.
