Dragon's Back is a mountain ridge on Hong Kong Island's southeastern coast, named for its undulating profile resembling a dragon's spine. The trail forms part of Stage 8 of the Hong Kong Trail, running between Shek O Peak and Tai Long Wan. It has gained international recognition as a signature hiking route near the city, offering coastal scenery without remote travel. The ridge sits within Shek O Country Park, designated in 1979. Its proximity to urban areas makes it accessible for day hikers seeking elevated terrain with sea views.

The trail traverses open ridge terrain with grassy slopes and scattered shrub vegetation. The highest point reaches Shek O Peak. Along the route, hikers encounter viewpoints overlooking the South China Sea, Shek O peninsula, and outlying islands. The eastern descent leads toward Tai Long Wan, where beaches and village settlements appear. No built facilities exist on the ridge itself. The landscape comprises natural coastal scrub and grassland ecosystems typical of Hong Kong's subtropical environment. Weathered rock formations occur along the path.

The Dragon's Back section typically requires two to three hours for the ridge traverse at moderate pace, though individual timing varies with fitness and stops. The full Stage 8 of the Hong Kong Trail extends longer if continuing to Tai Long Wan. Hikers should allow additional time for approach from transport points and descent to connecting paths. Morning starts are advisable during warmer months to avoid midday exposure on the exposed ridge.

Daily, including public holidays; the outdoor trail has no published gate hours. No routine closure day is published. AFCD's current country-park facilities notice, updated 2026-08-31, lists no closure affecting Dragon's Back or Shek O Country Park. The trail is open country park land without gated entry, though darkness hiking carries inherent risks on exposed ridge terrain. October through April offers drier conditions with reduced heat stress for exposed walking. Summer months bring high humidity, intense solar radiation, and thunderstorm probability. Typhoon season from May to November may close country park facilities and create hazardous wind conditions on the ridge. Visibility for coastal views improves after frontal passages with northerly winds.

Free public access; no admission ticket or hiking permit is required. Permits apply only to specified restricted activities in country parks. No entrance fee is charged for country park trail access in Hong Kong as general policy. The route requires no ticket purchase for hiking. Transport costs to trailheads apply via bus or taxi from urban centers. No commercial operation manages the ridge itself. Visitors should carry sufficient water and provisions as no vendors operate on the trail. Any guided tour fees would be set by private operators, not by park management.

From MTR Shau Kei Wan Station Exit A2, walk to Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminus and take Citybus route 9 to To Tei Wan on Shek O Road; the Dragon's Back trailhead is beside the stop. The Shau Kei Wan–Shek O public minibus also serves To Tei Wan. After finishing at Big Wave Bay, take Citybus route 9 from Big Wave Bay Road back toward MTR Shau Kei Wan Station. The conventional access uses public bus services to Shek O Road near To Tei Wan village, from where a paved path leads to the trail start. Buses operate from Shau Kei Wan MTR station on Hong Kong Island. Alternative access exists from Chai Wan MTR station via different approach paths connecting to the Hong Kong Trail network. Private vehicle parking is extremely limited near trailheads. Taxi drop-off is possible at To Tei Wan. The trail connects eastward to Tai Long Wan with return options by bus or on foot.

The official route includes a challenging 500-metre stepped ascent to Shek O Peninsula Viewing Point and another stepped descent toward Big Wave Bay. AFCD describes Hong Kong Trail Stage 8 as the trail's steepest section, with a strenuous ascent and treacherous terrain. Public toilets and rain shelters are available near Big Wave Bay Picnic Area, at the route's eastern end. The exposed ridge offers minimal shade and no shelter from lightning during thunderstorms; descent is advised when storms approach. Summer heat exposure risks dehydration and heat illness without adequate water carrying. Trail surface includes uneven rock and eroded sections with trip hazards. No emergency call points exist on the ridge; mobile coverage varies. Cliff edges present fall risks, particularly in reduced visibility. No potable water sources occur along the route. Solo hiking without communicated plans increases search difficulty if incapacitated. Country park regulations prohibit littering and vegetation damage.

The ridge offers panoramic coastal vistas eastward toward Shek O and south to the sea, with optimal lighting in morning hours for that orientation. The undulating trail profile creates foreground interest for landscape composition. Clear atmospheric conditions following frontal passage yield sharpest distant island views. Midday summer light produces harsh contrast on exposed slopes. The descent toward Tai Long Wan provides elevated beach perspectives. Sunrise from the ridge requires pre-dawn ascent with appropriate lighting equipment for safe path navigation.
