Berlin Airport: FEX, S-Bahn and Bus

Berlin Brandenburg Airport has one passenger railway station, Flughafen BER, directly under Terminal 1 on level U2. FEX and RE20 use the fast central corridor through Südkreuz and Potsdamer Platz to Hauptbahnhof. RB24 and RB32 serve Schöneweide and Ostkreuz, making them practical for addresses in eastern Berlin. S9 continues through central stops including Alexanderplatz, Friedrichstraße, Hauptbahnhof and Zoologischer Garten, while S85 links the airport with the eastern ring and northern Berlin. For destinations on U7, X7 provides a frequent connection between BER and Rudow; X71 continues beyond Rudow to Alt-Mariendorf on U6. These buses use stops on the Terminal 1 arrivals level. A bus-to-U-Bahn trip can be useful when the accommodation is south or southwest of the rail corridor, but it adds a transfer and the U-Bahn leg. Compare the complete journey in the live VBB planner.

Terminal 2 does not have a separate rail station or road approach. From the railway platform, follow the route through Terminal 1 and the signed path to Terminal 2 via arrivals level E0. A train’s advertised city-to-airport time therefore does not include the walk to Terminal 2, security or baggage handling. Confirm both the airport code BER and the terminal before starting; the old Tegel and Schönefeld airport-transfer patterns are not a substitute for the current BER network.

BER publishes approximate FEX and RE20 journey times of 23 minutes between Hauptbahnhof and the airport, 19 minutes from Potsdamer Platz and 14 minutes from Südkreuz. These figures describe the scheduled rail leg to Flughafen BER, not a door-to-door transfer. Add the walk through the terminal, waiting time, any city connection and the final walk to the accommodation. A direct S9 may be slower on the railway but simpler for an address already on its route; an advertised fast train can lose its advantage if it requires a long interchange. Current construction matters. BER’s dated travel notice says regional and long-distance trains cannot use the Stadtbahn between Charlottenburg and Ostbahnhof from 14 June through 12 December 2026. It also warns that FEX, RE20, RB22, RB24 and RB32 may have partial cancellations or diversions and directs passengers to the live VBB journey planner. The same notice says FEX and RE20 jointly provide four services per hour until December 2026. Use that current restriction rather than an older planned five-trains-per-hour summary. For an eastern-Berlin address, compare RB24 or RB32 at Ostkreuz and Schöneweide with S9 or S85. For central and southern connections, compare FEX or RE20 at Hauptbahnhof, Potsdamer Platz and Südkreuz. The official route lists are useful starting points, but scheduled minutes and intervals are not arrival guarantees. Search the exact date, direction and destination stop after landing, especially during the 2026 works.

BER is in fare zone C, so a journey between the airport and central Berlin requires Berlin ABC coverage. VBB lists the 2026 single Berlin ABC fare as €5.00 regular and €3.50 reduced. The regular VBB tariff applies to the airport without an added airport surcharge. A single ticket is valid for one one-way journey with transfers for 120 minutes in the Berlin tariff area; round trips and return journeys are excluded. The reduced fare is tied to VBB’s stated eligibility, including children aged 6–14, and should not be assumed for every visitor. A paper ticket bought from a machine must be validated before travel. The purchase price, the validation step and the fare charged are separate facts: buying an unvalidated paper ticket is not the same as holding a valid ticket for the journey. BER lists machines in terminals and stations plus VBB, BVG and S-Bahn apps as purchase channels. Check the product’s displayed activation state before boarding. For more travel that day, VBB lists a Berlin ABC 24-hour ticket at €12.90 regular and €8.00 reduced. The regular product includes up to three children aged 6–14 when the holder is at least 15; keep that concession attached to this exact product. Berlin WelcomeCard is a different tourist product. Only its ABC transport variant covers BER, including S-Bahn, buses, FEX and regional trains that stop at the airport; an AB WelcomeCard cannot be extended to C with a connecting ticket. Do not generalise those rules to BER2. The airport marks BER2 as subject to a surcharge and says its ticket is bought only on the bus. Choose the route first, then verify the matching fare and sales channel.

BER lists FEX service from about 04:00 to 01:00 and says FEX and RE20 jointly run four times per hour until December 2026. It publishes S9 and S85 every 20 minutes, X7 every 5–10 minutes and X71 every 20 minutes. These are service patterns for comparing options, not a promise that a particular train or bus will run on a disrupted date. The 04:00–01:00 window should not be read as a single platform’s first and last departure. Direction, day and construction work can change the usable service. Search from “Flughafen BER” to the final stop in the VBB planner, then check whether the result reaches Terminal 1 or requires a replacement bus at Willy-Brandt-Platz. BER identifies that square in Airport City as the stop for rail-replacement buses.

Sunday does not require a separate airport fare, but it can change frequency and onward connections. S85 runs toward Frohnau on weekdays and Pankow on weekends, while S9 operates through the city and also joins Berlin’s night network on weekend nights. These route-specific differences matter more than a generic statement that Berlin transport runs all night. Confirm the destination shown on the vehicle and the final local connection. If the live planner shows a replacement, allow for luggage and the outdoor transfer between the terminal and stop. A scheduled 14-, 19- or 23-minute rail leg cannot guarantee check-in time, and a nominal interval cannot guarantee that the next service has enough capacity or that the onward connection will wait.

After the main daytime rail window, use the actual night network rather than assuming that every FEX or S-Bahn departure continues unchanged. BER lists N7 between BER and Rathaus Spandau via Rudow and Hermannplatz every 30 minutes. On weekends N7 operates only between the airport and Rudow because U7 runs through the night from Rudow. N60 links BER with Alexanderplatz via Schönefeld and Treptower Park every 30 minutes, while N36 serves Königs Wusterhausen, Wildau and the surrounding area hourly. VBB also identifies N7X as a weeknight express from Zoologischer Garten through western and southern Berlin to BER, and S9 as part of the weekend-night network. Those are route- and day-specific options, not proof of one continuous airport service from every district. Check the date and direction in the live planner, then plan the connection from the listed stop to the accommodation. A licensed taxi is the fallback when the confirmed public-transport itinerary no longer fits. BER directs arriving passengers to the north and south taxi ranks in front of Terminal 1 on level E0 and warns travellers to use only marked taxis at the designated ranks. Terminal 2 passengers use the same Terminal 1 ranks and the signed inter-terminal path. The airport can help request a vehicle for reduced mobility, a child seat or a larger group at the rank. For an early departure, plan backwards from the airline’s required arrival time. Include the terminal walk, ticket activation or validation, possible replacement transport and a missed connection margin. Recheck the itinerary on the travel date; the current 2026 construction notice makes an old saved route unreliable.
