Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi's visitor map is divided among the central island, Saadiyat Island, Yas Island and the Grand Canal area. The Corniche, Qasr Al Hosn and downtown form the central core; Louvre Abu Dhabi and the cultural district sit on Saadiyat; theme parks and entertainment venues cluster on Yas. Distances are substantial and summer heat limits long transfers on foot, so plan one geographic zone at a time.

How the city is laid out

The central island stretches southwest from the Corniche through downtown and the Al Hosn area. The presidential and palace end lies farther west. Saadiyat Island sits northeast with Louvre Abu Dhabi and the developing cultural district. Yas Island is farther east near the airport and holds major entertainment venues. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Grand Canal area lie southeast of the centre, forming another route that should not be folded into a casual downtown walk.

Getting around

Use public buses, the Experience Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus, metered taxis or ride-hailing between the city's separated zones. Experience Abu Dhabi states that public buses use the prepaid Hafilat card and that its visitor shuttle links hotels and attractions across central Abu Dhabi, Yas, Saadiyat, Jubail and the Grand Canal area. Walking works within individual waterfront or cultural clusters, but it is not a practical default between islands.
