Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi sits on a T-shaped island that pushes out into the Persian Gulf, less than 250 metres from the mainland and tied to it by the Maqta and Mussafah bridges. The city covers 972 km² and held 2,189,860 people in 2024. Almost everything a visitor books is on or across water: the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque near the Maqta crossing, the museum district rising on Saadiyat Island over a five-lane bridge, the mangrove park along Al Qurm Corniche on the island's eastern edge. Distances run longer than the map suggests and the links between them are motorways, so a day here is planned around drives rather than around walks.
