Doha

More than four in five people in Qatar live in Doha or the suburbs around it, which makes the city and the country very nearly the same subject. It held some 14,000 inhabitants in the 1950s and passed 83,000 by the 1970s, and much of what a visitor now walks past on the waterfront stands on land reclaimed since then, around the crescent-shaped bay the dredging produced. Doha became a capital only in 1971, at independence from Britain. Distances are longer than the skyline suggests: Education City and the Aspire Zone sit inland in Al Rayyan, and neither is a walk from the bay.
