About Yiu Ming Temple

Yiu Ming Temple stands at 16–22 Retreat Street in Alexandria, an inner suburb of Sydney. The Chinese temple is also known as Yiu Ming Hung Fook Tong Temple, Chinese Temple, Hong Sheng Gong and Hung Sheng Gong. Construction began in 1908, with commissioned interior work dating from 1907, 1909 and 1917. The temple’s design combines traditional Chinese temple forms with local materials and Federation-era detailing. Its figurative ceramic roof tiles were imported from Foshan, and the interior fittings preserve evidence of Chinese decorative craftsmanship from the early twentieth century. The site has a recorded history of continuous Chinese occupation from the 1870s and remains associated with the Yiu Ming Society, which supported members through housing, employment and other assistance. Yiu Ming Temple was listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 24 September 1999 for its historical, architectural, religious and social significance. Visitors should remember that this is an active religious and community place.
