Cebu City

Cebu City is a coastal strip pressed between hills and the Mactan Channel, and its airport is not in it — flights land on Mactan Island across the water, which shapes the first half-hour of any arrival. Founded in 1565, it is the oldest Spanish city in the Philippines, and its three oldest sights stand within a few streets of one another: Magellan's Cross, planted in 1521, the Basilica del Santo Niño and Fort San Pedro. The 2024 census counted 965,332 people in the city and about 3.16 million in the metropolitan area, and in January the Sinulog festival takes over all of it.
