Thonburi Railway Station

What it is

Siriraj Bimuksthan Museum occupies the old Thonburi railway station on the Siriraj Hospital grounds in Bangkok Noi, and it is two things at once: a preserved terminus and a museum about the ground it stands on. The station opened on 19 June 1903 as the head of the State Railway's Southern Line, designed by the German architect Karl Dohring in a European brick expressionist manner unlike anything else in the district. During the Second World War it became the Japanese supply base for the Burma Railway and was heavily bombed by the Allies in December 1944 and March 1945, then rebuilt in 1950 by Mom Chao Vodhyakara Varavarn. Trains left for the last time on 3 October 2003, after a replacement station was built about 900 metres away, and the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University reopened the building as a museum in 2013. Its conservation work was recognised with an ASA Architectural Conservation Award for 2020-2021.

What's inside

The museum is laid out as eight named rooms, and the sequence moves outward from the hospital to the riverbank rather than following the railway. Sirisarapas is the introductory lecture room; Sirirachakattiyaphiman covers royal patronage of Siriraj Hospital and of Thai medicine; Sathanphimukhmongkhlakhet shows Thai classical painting and puppet theatre; Boranratchasastra displays weapons from several countries; Khamnakhaombanharn is a film about the Chao Phraya; Sirirachaboranpavattti traces the history of medical education; Siamruetvechsastra sets out traditional Thai medical knowledge; and Nivassirinawes holds a large ancient boat excavated on the site, shown with canal maps and the history of the Bangkok Noi community. Outside the building stand the fort foundations of the former Wang Lang palace. Visitors should note that this is a different museum from the medical collections elsewhere on the Siriraj campus, which are ticketed and displayed separately.

How long to spend

Two hours is the figure recorded for this entry, and it is not padding: eight exhibition rooms, two of them film-based, take longer than their floor area suggests, and the boat hall alone absorbs twenty minutes for anyone who reads the excavation captions. A visitor with no interest in the medical history rooms can move through the building in an hour by concentrating on the boat, the station fabric and the Wang Lang foundations outside. Anyone combining this with the other Siriraj collections should allow half a day for the campus as a whole.

Season and crowds

A weekday morning is the best bet. The museum sits inside a working teaching hospital whose approach roads and river piers are busiest with patients and staff early in the day and again in the late afternoon, and the exhibition rooms themselves are quietest before Bangkok school groups arrive. Because opening hours for this museum could not be confirmed from an operator page, the practical advice is stronger than usual: confirm the day and the hours by telephone or at the Siriraj information desk before crossing the river for it, and treat any hours quoted by a third-party listing as unverified. Interiors are air-conditioned, so the season matters far less here than the day of the week.

No admission price is recorded for Siriraj Bimuksthan Museum, and no opening hours are recorded either, because nothing operator-published could be read on 25 August 2026. The museum is run by the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, and its own pages were checked and found unusable: sirirajmuseum.com redirects to www2.si.mahidol.ac.th/museum/, which did not respond; si.mahidol.ac.th/sirirajmuseum/ and its Siriraj Bimuksthan page did not respond; the museum's online ticket system at si-eservice2.mahidol.ac.th did not respond; and the most recent archived copy of the museum site carries only a Thai notice that the website is temporarily closed for maintenance. A ticket is charged in practice, and the museum sells it at the door and online, but this page will not print a figure it could not read from the operator. Confirm the price and the hours with the museum before travelling.

Getting there

The museum is on the Siriraj Hospital campus at the mouth of Khlong Bangkok Noi, on the Thonburi side of the river, and the river is the sensible way in. Cross-river ferries land at the Wang Lang and Rot Fai piers a few minutes' walk from the building, which makes the approach from the Rattanakosin bank quick and cheap; the Chao Phraya express boats stop nearby on the same bank. Overland, the current Thonburi railway station stands roughly 900 metres from the old one it replaced, and taxis reach the hospital gates from Arun Amarin Road, though hospital traffic at shift change is slow. Inside the campus, follow signs for the museum rather than for the emergency department, and expect to walk a few hundred metres between hospital buildings after passing the gate.

What to watch out for

The first trap is the name. Several separate museums operate on this campus, and visitors regularly buy or queue for the wrong one; Siriraj Bimuksthan is the history museum in the old railway station, not the anatomical and forensic collections that Bangkok listings usually mean by Siriraj Museum. The second is the unconfirmed timetable: with no operator page readable, an unannounced closed day or a public-holiday closure is a real risk, and a wasted river crossing is the cost. The third is context. This is a hospital, so photography of patients or of ward corridors is not acceptable, dress should be ordinary and modest, and voices should stay low in the connecting walkways. Bags may be checked at the entrance, and some rooms restrict flash or ban photography outright; ask at the desk rather than assume.

Photography

The exterior is the strongest subject and it is unrestricted: Dohring's brick facade repays a straight-on frame from across the forecourt in the morning, when the light comes off the river and the brick warms up, and the fort foundations of the Wang Lang palace give a low foreground for a wider composition. Inside, the boat hall is dark and the boat is long, so a fast lens and a braced elbow beat a flash that will simply not carry; check at the desk which rooms allow photography at all, because film-based rooms and some royal displays are usually excluded. Tripods are unlikely to be welcome anywhere in a hospital building. Nothing should be photographed beyond the museum's own doors.
