The thing to establish about Miami first is that Miami Beach is a different city. Biscayne Bay separates the mainland, where downtown, Brickell and Little Havana are, from the barrier islands carrying South Beach and its Art Deco blocks, and crossing between them means a causeway. On the mainland side Miami has the third-largest skyline in the United States, over 300 high-rises with 70 of them above 150 metres. The city proper counted 442,241 people in 2020 against roughly 6.39 million in the metropolitan area, and almost none of that spread is walkable neighbourhood to neighbourhood.
