Los Angeles covers about 1,210 km², and that single number governs a visit. The city fills the basin behind the Pacific, climbs through the Santa Monica Mountains and carries on north into the San Fernando Valley, so the distance between two things worth seeing is normally measured in driving time rather than blocks. An estimated 3.87 million people live inside the city limits in 2025, 12.9 million in the metropolitan area, over 18 million across Greater Los Angeles. It was founded in 1781 on the Tongva village of Yaanga and incorporated as an American city in 1850.
