Honolulu runs in a strip along the southeast coast of Oʻahu, caught between the ridges and the sea. The 2020 census counted 350,964 people and the estimate for 2025 is 341,868 — a shrinking city that took in close to 1.5 million visitors in 2024. It has been the capital of Hawaii since 1845, through a kingdom, a United States territory and a state, and the harbour that made it worth having is still in use. Pearl Harbor, west of downtown, remains the base of the Pacific Fleet, and the attack there on 7 December 1941 is why the name travelled.
