What it is

The Victoria and Albert Museum is the national museum of art, design and performance at Cromwell Road in South Kensington, and its permanent collection of more than 2.8 million objects makes it the world's largest museum of applied and decorative arts. General admission to V&A South Kensington is free and needs no booking; some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge. The museum describes its South Kensington site as seven miles of galleries, and the range is deliberately unruly: Italian Renaissance sculpture, Mughal jade, Japanese armour, Elizabethan miniatures, Victorian cast plaster, twentieth-century radios and contemporary dress sit in the same building. It is not an art gallery in the National Gallery sense and it is not a history museum in the British Museum sense. It was founded to teach designers and manufacturers what good making looks like, and that founding purpose still explains the shelving: things are grouped by what they are made of and how they were made, rather than by who made them or when. The building is part of the exhibit. Aston Webb's Cromwell Road front, the mosaic-lined Victorian refreshment rooms and the two enormous Cast Courts are objects in the collection as much as anything in a case.

What's inside

The set pieces at the V&A are the rooms rather than single objects. The two Cast Courts, built by Henry Scott between 1870 and 1873 with ceilings 25 metres high, hold hundreds of plaster casts taken from European monuments: Trajan's Column stands there in two stacked halves because it does not fit in one, alongside a full-size cast of Michelangelo's David and the Portico of Glory from Santiago de Compostela. The three Victorian refreshment rooms, restored between 1974 and 1978, are still the museum cafe. The Morris Room was the Green Dining Room of 1866 to 1868 by Philip Webb and William Morris with stained glass by Edward Burne-Jones; the Gamble Room is sheathed in moulded ceramic tile; the Grill Room by Edward Poynter is tiled with the months and seasons, painted by students of the art school then housed in the building. When it opened in 1857 the museum was the first in the world to feed its visitors. Elsewhere the Raphael Cartoons hang in the West Hall, the British Galleries run the story of design from 1500 to 1900, and the Exhibition Road Quarter of 2017 by Amanda Levete's AL_A adds the Blavatnik Hall, an 1,100-square-metre column-free underground exhibition gallery and a courtyard paved with 11,000 handmade porcelain tiles. The John Madejski Garden sits in the middle of the quadrangle.

How long to spend

Allow two and a half hours for a first visit to V&A South Kensington, which is the duration recorded on this page. That is enough for the Cast Courts, one or two subject galleries chosen in advance, the Madejski Garden and a sit-down in the Gamble Room, and it is not enough to see the museum. Nobody sees the museum. With seven miles of galleries on the museum's own reckoning, an attempt at completeness produces a blur and sore feet, so the better plan is to pick three rooms and treat everything between them as a bonus. Add an hour if a ticketed exhibition is on the list, because those are one-way routes with their own queue. Families with young children should budget less time and more floor: two hours, one gallery, and the garden. Visitors who want the building rather than the collection can do the entrance hall, the Cast Courts, the refreshment rooms and the Exhibition Road courtyard in about ninety minutes.

Season and crowds

V&A South Kensington opens daily from 10.00 to 17.45 and stays open until 22.00 on Fridays, with some galleries closing after 17.45 on those late evenings. The museum begins clearing galleries 30 minutes before closing, so a 17.00 arrival is really a 45-minute visit. It is closed on 24, 25 and 26 December. The Friday late is the single most useful thing on the timetable: the building is calmer after 18.00 than at any point in the working week, and the Main Cafe serves hot meals from 18.30 to 20.00 on the selected Fridays that run the Late Contemporary Views programme. Weekday mornings shortly after opening are the next best window. Weekends and school holidays are busiest, and South Kensington station is shared with the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum, which puts a great many people on the same pavement at the same time. Check the museum's gallery closure notices before travelling; at the time of writing the Fashion Gallery in Room 40 is closed for redevelopment until autumn 2028, the Korea Gallery in Room 47g is closed until December 2026, and the South Asia Gallery in Rooms 41 and 47b is closed for refurbishment until spring 2028.

Tickets

Admission to V&A South Kensington is free and no booking is required, which is the value recorded on this page. Some exhibitions and events carry a separate charge, sold through the museum's own website; disabled visitors are entitled to discounted exhibition tickets and can add a free companion or carer ticket to every disabled ticket. Members visit free, with unlimited entry to all exhibitions. The costs that catch people out are not admission but storage: the cloakrooms at the Cromwell Road and Exhibition Road entrances charge per item, £3 for coats, umbrellas and small bags, £5 for a cabin bag of 56 by 45 by 21 centimetres, and £7 for larger bags, folding bikes and adult scooters. Luggage with wheels and any bag bigger than a cabin bag is not allowed in the galleries at all, so a museum stop between hotel and train needs planning. Cloakrooms open 10.00 to 17.30 daily and 10.00 to 21.30 on Fridays.

Getting there

The museum's address is Cromwell Road, London SW7 2RL, with a second entrance on Exhibition Road. South Kensington Underground station is a five-minute walk and Gloucester Road is ten minutes; several bus routes stop outside, and bike hire is available at Exhibition Road and Thurloe Place. The nearest step-free Underground stations are Knightsbridge, 0.6 miles away, and Earl's Court at 1.2 miles, so wheelchair users arriving by Tube should plan for the longer approach rather than South Kensington. Both the Cromwell Road and Exhibition Road entrances are step-free and wheelchair accessible, and wheelchairs and walking sticks can be borrowed if the museum's accessibility aid form is submitted at least 24 hours ahead. The V&A warns that planned Piccadilly line upgrades through 2026 and 2027 may disrupt journeys, so the line's closure page is worth checking on the morning of a visit. The pedestrian subway from South Kensington station is the dry-weather route and delivers you to the Exhibition Road end.

What to watch out for

The practical trap at the V&A is closing time rather than queueing: galleries begin to clear 30 minutes before the doors shut, and the shops close at 17.30 while the museum is still open. The second trap is baggage. Wheeled luggage and any bag larger than 56 by 45 by 21 centimetres are barred from the galleries, cloakroom space is charged per item, and bag searches form part of the security procedure. E-bikes, e-scooters and any similar device with a rechargeable battery are not permitted in the cloakroom or anywhere on the premises because of the fire risk, and neither are drones. Gallery closures are frequent and long-running at a museum in permanent renovation, so a visit planned around one collection should be checked against the closure list first; extreme heat has also closed galleries temporarily, including Ceramics in Rooms 136 to 146. The John Madejski Garden closes at 17.00 and starts emptying from 16.40. Its pond is open for paddling under posted rules — fully clothed, no swimming, no running, children accompanied — though it was closed under the Thames Water hosepipe ban when these pages were read.

Photography

The V&A's visitor pages do not publish a general policy on personal photography, so this guide records none; what they do state is that drones are not permitted anywhere on the premises. Individual exhibitions and loan displays set their own rules and post them at the door, and those are the ones to read. On light: the Cast Courts are top-lit through enormous skylights and are at their best on a bright morning, when Trajan's Column is legible from the upper corridor in Room 111 rather than as a silhouette. The Ceramic Staircase, the Gamble Room tiles and the mosaic pediment on the north facade all reward a visit in the second half of the afternoon. The Exhibition Road courtyard is a hard, pale, reflective surface that flatters wide shots and defeats faces at midday. Inside, the John Madejski Garden gives the only clean sightline of the quadrangle's four different building campaigns in one frame, which is the picture that explains the museum's shape better than any gallery view.
