Washington is 177 km² of ground that was drawn before it was built. Pierre Charles L'Enfant laid it out in 1791 as four quadrants meeting at the Capitol, which is why every address here needs a compass point after it and why ignoring that puts a visitor a mile from the museum they wanted. The 2020 census counted 689,545 residents against 6,304,975 in the metropolitan area, and the city empties accordingly at the end of a working day. Parks and greenspace take about a fifth of the land; most of what a first visit is for stands along one strip of it.
