New York holds an estimated 8,584,629 people across 300.46 square miles, which makes it the most densely populated large city in the United States and gives the metropolitan area around it more than 20.1 million residents. The practical thing to understand first is the five boroughs. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island are each the same shape as a county, and a visitor who treats them as one city will spend the trip on the subway. Manhattan alone will absorb three days without effort.
