The thing most visitors mean by Las Vegas is not in Las Vegas. The Strip lies outside the city limits, in the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester, while the city proper — 641,903 residents at the 2020 census — keeps its own concentration of casinos downtown. Nothing here is old: the settlement dates from 1905, incorporation from 1911, and the population grew 85.2% between 1990 and 2000 alone. Over 40.8 million visitors came in 2023, which is the figure that explains the size of the hotels.
