Boston
Boston was founded in 1630, and more than two-thirds of the inner city's land did not exist then — it was made by filling tidal flats, which is why Back Bay runs on a clean grid while the North End does not. The city proper is small: 125.2 km² holding 675,647 people at the 2020 census, inside a metropolitan area of 4,941,632. Its 23 neighbourhoods sit close enough that the colonial core, the harbour and the Charles River are one day on foot, and the subway is needed only to cross the water to Charlestown or Cambridge.
