Karabel relief is a Hittite-Luwian rock monument carved into the south-facing slope at Karabel Pass near Kemalpaşa. Its central image is an armed male figure, approximately 2.5 metres high and 1.5 metres wide, cut directly into the stone rather than preserved as a movable museum object. Luwian hieroglyphic writing stands beside the figure, though weathering makes it difficult to read. The relief’s identity depends on the meeting of image, inscription, rock and pass: this is an ancient landmark encountered in İzmir’s countryside, where the surrounding route remains part of the experience.
