Theater in der Josefstadt, on Josefstädter Straße in the eighth district, is the oldest theatre in Vienna still operating in its original role, tracing its founding to 1788.

The present building dates from an 1822 rebuilding by the architect Joseph Kornhäusel after the earlier house was gutted; Beethoven wrote the incidental music "Die Weihe des Hauses" (The Consecration of the House) for its reopening that year, conducting the premiere himself.

The director Max Reinhardt took over the theatre in the 1920s and rebuilt its reputation as one of the German-speaking world's leading houses for spoken drama, a role it has kept since, distinct from Vienna's opera and concert houses.
