Theater in der Josefstadt 소개
Theater in der Josefstadt, on Josefstädter Straße in the eighth district, is the oldest theatre in Vienna still operating in its original role, tracing its founding to 1788.
The present building dates from an 1822 rebuilding by the architect Joseph Kornhäusel after the earlier house was gutted; Beethoven wrote the incidental music "Die Weihe des Hauses" (The Consecration of the House) for its reopening that year, conducting the premiere himself.
The director Max Reinhardt took over the theatre in the 1920s and rebuilt its reputation as one of the German-speaking world's leading houses for spoken drama, a role it has kept since, distinct from Vienna's opera and concert houses.
It runs with its own permanent acting ensemble rather than casting each production separately, which gives its repertory a consistency closer to a national company than to a commercial stage that books a new cast for every show.
The theatre takes its name from the surrounding Josefstadt district, itself named for Emperor Joseph II, and it has kept that name and location continuously since its eighteenth-century founding, unlike several Vienna venues that moved or were rebuilt on a different site after wartime damage.

안에 무엇이 들어있나요?
The auditorium keeps its early-nineteenth-century horseshoe shape and tiered boxes, restored and modernised over the decades but recognisably Kornhäusel's design rather than a later rebuild.
The programme is spoken theatre — classic and contemporary German-language drama and comedy — rather than opera, operetta or concert music, which sets it apart from the Staatsoper, Volksoper and the city's concert halls.
A sister venue, the Kammerspiele, operates under the same company at a separate address in the city centre, giving the house a second, more intimate stage alongside the main Josefstädter Straße building.

권장 관람 시간
A performance runs roughly two to two and a half hours including an interval, depending on the play; there is no walk-in tour of the building outside performance times, so a visit means attending a show.
A shorter one-act or studio production can run under two hours, and the exact running time for a given play is listed alongside its booking page rather than fixed for the house as a whole.

계절과 군중
The season runs from autumn through late spring with a summer break; the full schedule and cast list for each production are published on the theatre's own site well ahead of the run.
Performances are in German throughout, without surtitles, which matters for a visitor deciding whether to attend.
New productions typically open in the autumn and run in repertory alongside older productions through the season rather than each play having a single continuous run, so the same title can reappear on the calendar weeks apart.

티켓
Tickets are sold through the theatre's own box office and website by performance and seating tier; there is no general walk-in admission to see the building itself, since entry is tied to a performance ticket.
Guided building tours are occasionally offered outside the regular schedule and are announced separately from ticket sales for plays.
Discounted last-minute and student tickets are sold close to curtain time when a performance has not sold out, which is worth checking for a same-day visit rather than assuming full price is the only option.

가는 방법
The theatre stands on Josefstädter Straße, a ten-minute walk from Rathaus station on the U2 line.
Tram lines 2 and J and several bus routes stop closer, along Josefstädter Straße or at the nearby Lange Gasse junction.
The surrounding Josefstadt district is one of Vienna's smaller and quieter central districts, mostly residential streets and small shops rather than a tourist thoroughfare, so the theatre is reached through an ordinary neighbourhood rather than a landmark approach.

주의할 점
Performances are entirely in German with no surtitles, so a visitor without German should choose a production they already know or expect to follow the staging rather than the dialogue.
As at the Konzerthaus, doors typically close once a performance starts and latecomers wait for the interval.
Seating in the historic tiered boxes can restrict sightlines toward the edges of the stage, so a visitor choosing a seat online should weigh a central stalls position against a cheaper box seat with a partial view, especially since the auditorium's early-nineteenth-century proportions are narrower than a modern purpose-built theatre.

사진
The building's early-nineteenth-century façade on Josefstädter Straße is modest compared with Vienna's Ringstrasse theatres and photographs best straight-on in daytime light.
Photography inside the auditorium is not permitted once a performance is under way, though the foyer and staircase, with their period plasterwork, can usually be photographed before curtain or during the interval.
