Penfold Park

Penfold Park is a landscaped public park in the infield of Sha Tin Racecourse. The Hong Kong Jockey Club built the park, has managed it since it opened to the public in 1979, and now publishes its access calendar. Although the park began with public access on non-racedays, current Jockey Club schedules include reduced hours on designated Sha Tin racedays. A race meeting therefore changes the available visiting window; it does not automatically mean that Penfold Park is closed for the entire day.

The setting combines a public green space with Hong Kong’s equestrian history. Penfold Park served as a training venue for the Beijing 2008 Olympic equestrian events, and its Olympic displays preserve that connection inside the racecourse. The Jockey Club also uses the park for equestrian and community events and identifies it as habitat for wild egrets.

Pony World is a distinct facility within Penfold Park, not another name for the whole park. It offers interactive equine experiences including pony rides, stable visits, educational activities and photo opportunities with mini ponies. A normal park visit and participation in Pony World have different arrangements, so check the park calendar for the grounds and the separate Pony World information before travelling.

Penfold Park’s principal landscape is formed by grassed areas and greenery within the Sha Tin Racecourse infield. The Jockey Club identifies the grounds as one of Hong Kong’s major habitats for wild egrets and provides a Pet Zone for visitors with animals. The Pet Zone has its own gates, while newer pathway lighting and CCTV cover parts of the park. The operator does not publish a lake or a complete inventory of benches, so plan the visit around the named landscapes and facilities.

The Olympic displays are specific reminders of the 2008 equestrian events. The Jockey Club identifies the Olympic Mega Rings and an Olympic torch display within Penfold Park. They remain part of the visitor landscape because the site was used to train equestrian horses during the Games.

Facilities added or reopened during the 2026 enhancement programme include an Entrance Plaza, fountain, park office, newly built toilets, self-service beverage vending areas and covered seating. Emergency kiosks are equipped with automated external defibrillators and intercoms. Pony World adds stables, an interactive pony classroom, pony encounters and an activity zone, but it operates as a separately reserved experience. Phase Three work continues around the park, and temporary boundaries can place some of these facilities outside the area open to visitors on a particular day.

The operator does not publish a standard visit duration for Penfold Park or a visitor circuit with a required sequence. The available area can change while Phase Three work keeps sections behind marked boundaries. Choose a flexible amount of time, then adjust it after reading the entrance notices and seeing which areas are open.

The dated racecourse calendar sets the practical limits. In September 2026, normal park access is listed as 09:00–19:30, but designated Sha Tin racedays end at 11:30. Barrier trials and extended morning trackwork delay opening on specified dates. A visit on one of those days has a shorter usable window even though the park may remain accessible for part of the day. Check the latest notice before committing the rest of the day to another activity.

Phase Three work can also change how much of the park is available to walk through. Clear demarcation separates open and closed areas, and on-site wayfinding directs visitors around the work. Plan from the area that is actually accessible rather than the park’s full facility list. Pony World is a separate equine experience inside Penfold Park, with its own participation arrangements. General park access does not determine how long a Pony World activity takes, so include it in the day only after checking its current programme information.

Plan from the dated September 2026 calendar. The Jockey Club lists normal September access as 09:00–19:30. On the Sha Tin racedays of 6, 13, 20 and 27 September, Penfold Park is scheduled to open from 09:00 to 11:30. Those are shortened race-day hours, not full-day closures. On the barrier-trial dates of 1, 2, 3, 8, 11, 15, 17, 22, 25 and 29 September, the published window begins at 09:30 and ends at 19:30.

A newer trackwork notice creates additional delays within the same month. It states that opening will be delayed to 09:30 on 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21 and 22 September because morning trackwork has been extended. The Jockey Club warns that the actual opening time can move again according to trackwork progress. Where the trackwork notice and barrier-trial calendar overlap, follow the latest operator update.

The monthly calendar changes with racecourse operations, so September dates should not be carried into October or a later trip. Opening hours can also be adjusted before major Jockey Club racing events. Check the Penfold Park page on the travel date and read the notice board at the entrance. A dated notice is the controlling information when it differs from a remembered schedule.

The operator does not publish a general Penfold Park admission fee. Confirm the current park-entry arrangement at the entrance if a charge would affect the visit budget. Activities within the grounds can have their own prices and booking conditions even when no general park price is displayed.

Pony World has a separate, explicit ticket. The Jockey Club’s June 2026 programme sheet lists HK$50 per ticket for every participant and requires a reservation. Bookings open for the next 60 days through the Pony World reservation site. The published quota is 32 people per session, including no more than 28 riding participants, so a place in Penfold Park does not guarantee a place in a Pony World session. School and group bookings use the contact details in the programme sheet.

A ticket does not make every visitor eligible to ride. Pony riders must be 3–14 years old, at least 100 centimetres tall and below 70 kilograms, and the operator directs them to the Pony World dress requirements. All visitors must complete a Release and Indemnity electronic form before arrival. These eligibility and form requirements belong to the booked Pony World programme. Visitors entering Penfold Park without a Pony World booking should follow the park’s own entrance notices and access calendar.

Penfold Park is inside Sha Tin Racecourse. Use that location as the destination and follow the current Penfold Park entrance signs once at the racecourse complex. The operator does not publish a step-by-step route from an MTR station, parking availability or taxi instructions for Penfold Park. Check current racecourse access information instead of relying on a generic transport route around an event.

The public entrance gates, Penfold Park tunnel and staircase are undergoing enhancement work in September 2026. The Jockey Club asks visitors to remain aware of their surroundings there and to follow instructions from on-site security personnel. Temporary boundaries and wayfinding identify open and closed areas during the wider Phase Three works. Stay outside marked work areas even if an older map shows a route through them.

Check the operator page before setting out, then use the entrance notice board as the final direction on arrival. A group visiting during park hours must submit the Jockey Club’s Penfold Park Group Visit Notification Form and email it to customer care for arrangements. This notification process is for a group visit; it does not replace the separate Pony World reservation required for that programme.

Race days do not necessarily close Penfold Park for the full day. The September 2026 calendar shortens access to 09:00–11:30 on four Sha Tin racedays, while barrier trials and extended morning trackwork delay opening on specified dates. Major racing events can produce further ad-hoc adjustments. Read the latest online notice before departure and the entrance notice board on arrival, because a monthly schedule can be superseded by a newer instruction.

Phase Three enhancement work is continuing. The park remains partially open, with clear demarcation between closure and open areas and wayfinding for the public. The entrance gates, tunnel and staircase are also under enhancement. Stay inside the marked visitor area and follow on-site security directions. Emergency kiosks with automated external defibrillators and intercoms are among the newer supporting facilities.

Weather warnings can close the park. If a Black Rainstorm Warning is in force before opening, Penfold Park remains closed and may reopen two hours after the warning is lowered, subject to park conditions. The park also closes when tropical cyclone warning signal No. 8 or above, or another extreme-condition signal, is announced; reopening is again subject to conditions and scheduled two hours after the signal is lowered.

Pest control is scheduled on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11:00 to 12:00 and Thursday from 15:00 to 16:00. Check the entrance instructions during those periods and keep clear of any temporarily restricted treatment area.

Penfold Park’s Olympic equestrian displays and Pony World’s organised pony encounters provide two distinct photographic subjects. Penfold Park served as a training venue for the Beijing 2008 Olympic equestrian events. The Jockey Club identifies the Olympic Mega Rings and an Olympic torch display within the park. Pony World includes photo opportunities with mini ponies among its interactive experiences. The Jockey Club describes these encounters alongside stable visits, the interactive classroom, activity zone and pony rides. Check the separate Pony World participation arrangements before planning a pony photograph; general access to Penfold Park does not provide entry to every Pony World activity.

Access to a particular exhibit can change while Phase Three work is in progress. Marked closures determine which park areas are reachable, and shortened race-day hours can reduce the available visit. The operator does not publish a general tripod, drone, commercial-photography or golden-hour policy for Penfold Park. Ask on-site staff before setting up equipment or organising a commercial shoot, and follow the instructions given during a Pony World photo encounter.
